Book Review/ Giveaway: With the Tide by Mary Bright Carr

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED!!

with the tide cover
One of this week's giveaways is a book that came to me from Publishing Works with a lot of prepress that made the book sound interesting.

Synopsis: The story of memory, how it hides, or lingers behind doors, only to jump out and startle. Jon (Jonquil) is an emigrant from the UK, educated in biology at Trinity College in Dublin, who settles in a small town in the Hudson Valley, New York. There, with her young daughter, she begins to experience flashbacks of memories from a time in her previous marriage when her grip on reality was loosening. The memories are subtle and flashing. They are stored away, hidden beneath the surface. But memories have a life of their own. They rarely stay hidden forever and oftentimes jump out and startle us with their power. And in the end, they help to reveal to Jon the nature of all living things.

About the Author:  Mary Bright Carr spent her childhood abroad, living in the UK and Morocco. She graduated from Trinity College in Dublin and returned to the US to receive her psychology doctorate at NYU, with a specialty in human cognition and memory. Teaching as a professor at SUNY Oneonta along the way she has published books and article in her professional field; this is her first novel.

Review: Ok, this is a VERY small novel for starters at only 216 pages. I think it is one of those books that you either LOVE or go, " I can't believe I read the whole thing, UGH".  It either strikes a chord and offers enough narrative to make you happy, or you are like I was and it takes you a week to get thru it, because the back and forth leaves too many questions that aren't answered. There were alot of things I liked- the characters were very filled out and you felt you knew them, the dialogue was excellent and helped to propel the story along, and her descriptions were substantial that you really felt you were in the place settings. I just felt like I had missed the concept so to speak, as the book just didn't make me go aha. But then I like 600 page books that give me everything and answer all questions brought up within their pages. SOme of you may really like the book and it may resonate better with you than it did with me. If I was giving out grades, I'd give it a solid B+
