Book Review: Let's Do Lunch by Roger Troy Wilson

lets do lunch cover
Synopsis: Roger Troy Wilson weighed 425 pounds and had a 5-foot waist. He had given up on losing weight and prayed that he would die and go to Heaven.

After fifteen years of experimenting with different foods and eating patterns, he discovered how to actually have fun losing weight easily---almost the complete opposite of most diets. He lost 230 pounds and 24 inches from his waist.

Today Wilson has maintained his weight loss for years. “You do not need to exercise or count carbs. You can do it without portioning and shakes and chemicals,” says Wilson. In Let's Do Lunch, he reveals:

--the dumbest thing we all do that keeps us from losing weight

--special ways to eliminate cravings
--where to go and what to get when you want to eat something quick
--which “non-fattening” foods are actually fattening

Review: As diet books go, I would say this diet plan is very close to Sugar Busters. You stop eating flour,
potatoes, and refined sugar, and can eat as much veggies and fruits as you want. As anyone can tell you,
you do this and you WILL loose weight without trying!

Wilson has interesting points about refined sugar/syrup addiction and how to tell if you are addicted to them:
  • you feel hungry after eating products with a high amount of refined sugar, and the desire to eat only fattening foods
  • you may want to eat continuously
  • you are easily irritable
  • you feel very tired all the time and sleep alot

Natural sugars are better for you, and do NOT cause any of the above syptoms, as our bodies can easily process them. In fact, switching to fruit sugars can help you eliminate your addiction to refined sugars.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, then you probably will get alot out of Wilson's diet plan, as it will teach you how to readjust your body's craving for sugar. The book comes with sample recipes as well.
personally for me, I don't think this diet would work for an extended period- I can't eat the amount of veggies he recommends due to stomach issues. But I can adapt alot of his ideas like having a good breakfast to hold you over to lunch, having your main meal at lunch and having a light dinner.

My only quibles are that Wilson recommends Real Foods Original Corn Thins, in lieu of bread, chips and crackers. I checked multiple stores in my area and they weren't available, meaning I would have to order them or drive over an hours to find them. Aggravating and expensive! The other being that it seemed like every chapter he was hawking his laminated recipe cards and other diet accessories. I realize this is his business, but after the third time, it got irritating. Put the links in the front and at the end, of include them on a bookmark, but don't keep bombarding me with them!

All in all, I think this diet may work better for men. Women have monthly cravings that have nothing to do with processed sugar addiction and more to due with what their body needs at that moment, and this diet might be too restricting. BUT I'm sure it could be a big starter diet for a  week or two, to see fast results and keep you going!

Sample recipe:
Let's Do Lunch "Potato"Pancakes
( butter beans sub for potatoes)

3 cans large butter beans, drained
1 cup frozen corn kernels, defrosted and drained well
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup finely diced green bell pepper
1/4 cup 99% fat-free chicken broth
Mash or blend together the butter beans in a large bowl.
Add the chicken broth; blend until they're smooth and creamy.

Add all of the other ingredients; stir together. If possible, refrigerate the mixture for an hour before proceeding to the next step.

Make into patties, approx. 1/3 cup each. This will make 11 or 12 patties.

Heat a skillet on medium/high with 2 T olive oil and cook patties on one side until browned. Turn over and cook on the other side until browned.
