Synopsis: Dogs with issues are as misunderstood as they are loved. Lynn Hoover has put together a collection of case studies, information and proven strategies to help dogs. Families everywhere can learn how to manage and modify problem behaviors while increasing their understanding of dog's unique emotional and relationship needs. Dog trainers and behaviorists will be amazed by the simple but innovative strategies that Hoover provides in this book. Hoover wants to reduce the number of companion dogs that are inappropriately punished, discarded and euthanized for behavior problems that are resolvable. Her book will benefit anyone who wants to help a dog with issues, from hyperactivity to inappropriate elimination, separation anxiety, and aggression.
You can view a wonderful video of the book on Dogwise.com!
About the Author: I'm an animal behavior consultant and family therapist. Founder and past-president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultant, and a lifelong advocate for meaningful certification. She also has a previous book: The Family in Animal Behavior Counseling.
Review: Obviously with a new puppy, training is foremost in our minds. EVERY dog has their own quirks and behaviors- they are as unique and individual as us humans. Just like raising a child, you have to adjust how you teach them, based on their temperament and needs. I loved how Hoover started the book with explaining how a walk to the mailbox is routine for us humans, but it's like a field trip for kids to a dog, due to all the all the new smells and things to see. This is why dogs strain at the leash and want to get away- they actually want to check EVERYTHING out like a kid in a candy store.
Hoover's family psychology insights are helpful when relating them to our canine friends. For example larger dogs remain basically pre-teens/teenagers from FOUR months to 2 YEARS of age! While she admits we shouldn;t place human emotions on dogs, anyone who has had a dog knows they have emotions and feelings, that do need to be taken into account. It is an interesting take on dog training and one that has many merits to it. If you need help understanding and working with your dog's 'issues', I highly recommend this book!
