Book Review: Skeltons in the Swimmin Hole, Tales from Haunted Disney World by Kristi Petersen Schoonover

Well it's Halloween my dear readers and I wanted to share with you a great little Ghost Tale of a book for adults!

I wasn't too sure what to expect when I saw the promo for this book and that the author was looking for reviewers. I'm glad I contacted her and received a review copy, as this is a super book to be reviewing on Halloween!

Synopsis: In these chilling ghost stories set in Disney Parks, a thief is haunted by her sticky-fingered past. A woman wants an angry spirit to stop torturing her. A teenager demands her parents expel her wicked sibling. And a pilot wishes to unload his eerie cargo. But each will discover exorcism isn't as easy as going to Disney World. Fans of Down & Out in the Magic Kingdom and Lord Vishnu's Love Handles should find these literary horror stories an E-ticket ride.

skeletons in the swimmin hole coverAbout the Author: Kristi Petersen Schoonover's short fiction has appeared in a host of magazines and anthologies. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College, and hosts the paranormal fiction segment on The Ghostman & Demon Hunter Show broadcast, www.ghostanddemon.com, and serves as an editor for Read Short Fiction, www.readshortfiction.com. She teaches the first-ever online course in crafting the ghost story as part of a Paranormal Fiction course for To Write Well, www.towritewell.com, and lives in the Connecticut woods where she still sleeps with the lights on.Her website is www.kristipetersenschoonover.com.

Review: I HIGHLY recommend this book for all lovers of things Disney! While not every story takes place AT Disney World, Disney World is involved heavily in every story! It is the perfect Halloween hostess gift, and for difficult to buy for teens! Schoonover lists Poe (if you have to ask WHO?, skip to the end of this post and move on! SIGH), and it shows in her writing. I finished this book over 5 days ago, yet her dead animal story, Skeletons in the Swimmin' Hole, is still with me. Now that's a good storyteller! So check out this book and pick it up for some eerie tales...just make sure when you hear a noise in the middle of the night, it's not something from the Swimmin' Hole tales!

Be sure to check out a short tale from Schoonover, on her blogThe Cemetery of  Dismembered Dolls!

Happy Halloween- The Tale of Jack of Lanterns!

cat

Jack-o’-lanterns, we all know, are great orange pumpkins with eerie faces carved in them.

But few people know that the original jack-o’-lantern came from an Irish story, and that the first lantern was said to be a large turnip, lit by an ember from the fires of Hell. This is the story that was told:

An Irishman, Jack, was known to be so selfish and mean that the Devil waited eagerly to claim his soul. But
Jack was as crafty as he was bad, and he tricked the Devil into promising never to take him into Hell. When
Jack died his spirit was too evil to be accepted in Heaven. With no other place to go, Jack found himself standing at the gates of Hell, asking to be let in. But Satan’s promise could not be broken, and Jack’s soul could not even find rest there. The Devil tossed out a chunk of live coal from hell to light Jack’s way in the darkness. The coal was stuck in a large vegetable that Jack had been eating, and this became the first jack-o’-lantern!
jack o latern

When the custom of making jack-o’-lanterns was imported to the United States, it was found that pumpkins
were perfectly suited for carving. Now pumpkin faces are often seen lighting the way for the wandering spooks of Halloween night. The coming of Celtic (Irish/ Scot) immigrants to the United States has certainly influenced our customs and celebrations!

Product Alert: Shutterfly Christmas Cards aka 56 Days and Counting!

I know what you're thinking....it's another Christmas idea post? Well guess what, now it's only 56 days til Christmas. That means you have 2 days LESS to think about the Christmas Cards you're gonna send out this year!

If you're like us, you :
  a) don't send out as many cards as you used to (what with postage hikes and all)
  b) just don't have time to make up newsletters to include with your Christmas cards, so instead you send a
great Christmas photo or use a Christmas photo card.

I know alot of you use Shutterfly already and you really trust them, and would rather use them to print personalized Christmas cards, so I was happy when I was contacted by the Clever Girls Collective about being selected to talk to you about the holiday photo cards that Shutterfly has available this year!

I used Shutterfly for kiddo's first Christmas and was impressed with the quality of the cards and their quick delivery.
all wrapped card
As you know I like photo cards that I can showcase multiple photos on, but this new card from Shutterfly, All Wrapped Up, really caught my eye and gave me all sorts of ideas, not only for our Christmas card, but to use as a Christmas party invitation, or even a thank you card!

mod snowflake card
And the Mod Snowflake card is both retro and modern at the same time, and I adore the look of it. Course it means I'd have to have the right black and white photo....hmmm, some editing to do there! The only drawback is that it requires extra postage due to sizing. BUMMER.

vintage noel card

Speaking of nostalgia, I love the Vintage Noel card for it's sweet 'Blessed; saying and vintage look!

believe card

BUT if you're gonna have the SANTA photo- then you have to have the Believe card! 10% f sales go to the Armstrong Love Strong Foundation, So you do something good, while sending out your holiday greetings!

AND if you're having a cookie making party, you're gonna want their Cookie Swap card! It's part of their Christmas Party Invitations collection and too adorable!

I know, I know, I've given you too many choices and options now! Give yourself a week, then you'll only have 49 days left! Happy Card Hunting!

a christmas carol coverSometimes you get sent a book for review that is just so STUNNING, that when you get it, you don't even want to open it all the way, you just want to enjoy the first page you open!

A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book is one of those books! This book is PERFECT to give as a family present, as a hostess gift, or as a teacher's present. it is beautiful on the outside and when you open it up it is even better!

a christmas carol sample pageThis is an oversized book, but also a condensed one at the same time. Each page has a gorgeous pop that illustrates the section of the book, that the small booklet, that is in its own pocket, covers. The full story from Charles Dickens is there, but the pop up is guaranteed to keep the younger crowd amazed. Sorry by pix didn't come out better, there is so much to pop up and its hard to take a picture of it all!

a christmas carol sample page 2Kiddo has received some gorgeous pop-up books, but I think this one really is the best one I've seen EVER. There really is no other word than STUNNING!

This would be a great read to me book by Dad or Grandpa, to make a family tradition come alive to the younger generation!

Kudos to Hachette for publishing this book!

Hurry and check it out at your local bookstore and start a new tradition in your family today!

The Dog House: Product Alert- the ZooKeeper Vehicle Pet barrier

BTHM The dog house button

As part of my search for unique and great canine products with the advent of Marley's arrival (can you believe she's already 32lbs and climbing? WHEW!), we started looking at items to keep her contained in the backseat with kiddo on trips.

We have a harness that clips onto the seat belt, but the dog is part Houdini and has figured ways to get out of the harness! if she could figure out a way to crawl up into kiddo's carseat, she'd be extremely happy! So we started looking at vehicle pet barriers for cars. But as I have a SUV, I needed something larger, but I did not want something hard that would cause a problem in case of an accident.

Enter Razonia at RM PR! She let me know about an unique product called the ZooKeeper, which is easy to install AND remove, is NOT permanent and does what it says it will do! I was more than happy to give it a go!

It arrived in a big box and we got a little worried, but hubby pulled it out and saw that it had been well packaged, and was a reasonable size, so he got to work on installing it in my truck. It only took him about 20 minutes, with reading ALL the instructions, and having to move stuff that was already attached to the seat backs.. (The second time, only took about 5 minutes, as he knew what to do!).

How it works...

    zookeeper in place 2
  • Flexible connection cords fasten around headrest posts. So you can move your seats freely: easily tilt forward, recline backward, and slide back and forth
  • Zero drills. Zero holes. Zero alterations to your car.
  • Custom fit to your vehicle with horizontal and vertical adjustments.
  • Black finish compliments any interior.
  • Expandable to 61" wide- Prevents pets from freely jumping into the front seat through the space between the front seats.
  • 100% satisfaction, no hassle, money back guarantee!
  • Engineered in USA. Patent Pending.

zookeeper in place 3

Now nosey puss CAN put her snout in between the slats, but she can't get her whole head through, so it stops her completely. Unfortunately I couldn't get a quick pix of that, but it works! As you can see from the opposite view, the seat space is totally blocked and she knows she has to go back to the seat (we left her loose to see what she would do). That would be her dejected look above, and her I'm not looking at you look below. Funny dog....
zookeeper in place 1

I am really amazed at how well this product works for being so light weight and easy to install! I really love that we can install it in ANY of the cars we have (sportscar, coupe, minivan, suv) in the family, we no problem. Which means if we buy a new car/truck, it will work in it too. Talk about a budget saver! The ZooKeeper may seem pricey (over $70), but it's ease of use and versatility make it WELL worth it to keep your 75lb dog from jumping in your lap when you're driving and causing an accident!

We will definitely use it when we have to go on any trips with Marley over 20 minutes, and I will be highly recommending it to everyone!

Book Review and Giveaway: Daily Guideposts 2011 Devotional

**** THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED ***

I don't know about your house, but I barely remember a time when Daily Guideposts weren't in our house, my grandparents' houses and at my greataunts' houses! They were a fixture of my childhood!

About Daily Guideposts:
Now in its 35th year, Daily Guideposts has brought inspiration and guidance to millions of readers, selling more than 20 million copies since the devotional series’ debut in 1975 as one of the first daily devotional collections. Daily Guideposts is the creation of former Guideposts Books editor Fred Bauer, who was inspired to write a devotional that offered daily prayers and stories for year-round spiritual growth. Originally conceived as a collection of Bauer’s reflections on faith in his own life, Daily Guideposts now encompasses more than 50 writers’ stories in each edition.

daily guideposts 2011 coverSynopsis:
Daily Guideposts: 2011 celebrates growing in God’s love and wisdom, bringing readers simple yet profound devotions to connect with God in new ways — even on the most hectic of days.

Daily entries open with a scripture reading for meditative reflection, followed by a true, first-person story, and close with a short prayer. Monthly “seeds of love” sections encourage readers to write down their blessings so they will become more mindful of all they have to be thankful for in their lives.

More than 50 writers contribute to this new spiritual companion, sharing stories of how God has transformed their relationships, jobs, families and faith. With stories from bestselling authors such as Debbie Macomber to veteran Daily Guideposts devotional contributors Marion Bond West and Carol Kuykendall, “Daily Guideposts” readers will recognize their favorite writers while discovering new voices along the way.

Review: This is a nice heavy book, with a satin ribbon to hold your place. Each day begins with a bible verse, then a short commentary/story from one of the writers that illustrates the verse, followed by a short prayer.

An example for Oct. 28-
  • Bible Phrase: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" (shouldn't that be our daily prayer for each other and our children??).
  • The story from Brigette Weeks speaks of her suffering from Depression, going thru therapy and loosing her short term memory. BUT she could still knit and as she knitted a blanket for her unborn grandchild, she put prayers for health, happiness and safe journey for the infant. As she recovered the stitches gave her comfort and a sense of peace that her prayers would be heard.
  • Prayer: Thank you Jesus for sharing our pain and for the  hope and the healing You bring to so many.
This book is a lovely gift for teachers, family members and friends. Please keep it in mind for Christmas!

Book Review/ Giveaway: Broken Birds, the Story of My Momila by Jeannette Katzir

**THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

broken birds cover
Synopsis: Broken Birds is the nitty gritty, raw truth story of a twelve-year-old girl (My mom), who outwits, outruns and outlasts the strongest army of the time: the Nazi war machine.  Fate brings her to New York City, where opposites attract when a very war torn and pessimistic Channa finds true love in Nathan, a tall dark and very optimistic man who also survived the war.  (And that’s only the first 70 pages).
Their dance is set. They re-create a family, but Channa’s emotional foundation causes her to pass along wartime fears and trepidations to their five children and forces Nathan to constantly prove his allegiance to her. This fertile ground was ideal for perfecting submergence of feelings, hurts and a distorted view of love and family loyalties.  When Mom unexpectedly dies her children must finally confront reality . . . and the bad blood begins. When the battle finally ends and the smoke clears we are all too aware of the illusion we all seemed to share.
Broken Birds, illuminates the positives and the negatives that occur in life, love and family. The trials and tribulations of Channa and her family touch the reader and cause them to ponder their own family patterns, evaluation, dynamics and weaknesses.  Is then up them to try to affect a change, while they still are able.
About the Author: Katzir become a woman strained by opposing allegiances with the family that raised her and the family she was creating.. It wasn't until Katzir's mother unexpectedly died that Jeannette began to recognize how far the shadow of the Holocaust had stretched into her life. To deal with her loss, she began writing a book that told the story of her mother, whose life was forever marked by the Holocaust. She lives in Southern California with her husband.
Review: This is one of those books that once you start reading, you will not want to stop! The story of Katzir's parents making it to this country alone is an interesting read and one that will bring the horror of the Holocaust to a personal level. The ongoing story up til her mother's death will have echoes in most family dynamics. I think anyone with siblings will be totally able to relate and share the pain of Katzir's family. You do not want to speed thru this book, you relish the author's way with dialogue and descriptions! This is an enjoyable read and one I highly recommend!

Wordless Wednesday: County Fair Time!

Kiddo, Papa and I went to the local county fair last week, on opening day. After we got through the hour long traffic jam, from everybody who came to the parade, trying to find a parking spot (eek!), we all had a great time.
cotton candy

Kiddo really enjoyed running around and seeing everything this year. Although she has cottoned on (pardon the pun), that these types of festivals are where she is allowed to have cotton candy and she had to have some as soon as we got there!

Cows are of a great interest to her right now, and petting one is even better!

Word of warning about Italian Ices- the red is really strong!
Do you think her tongue could be ANY redder?

don't you want that BIG cow in the background in your freezer? LOL

Halloween Project 101, or is 140?

When we visited kiddos Grandma in Jackson last week, she got to see all her Spooky Houses laid out and was totally entranced! A few hours later when we were at Michael's, we saw some wooden 'spooky' houses and kiddo was immediately enchanted and informed me we HAD to get some for the house.

I thought it was a cute project and something we could put out every year, so we picked up the ones they had. Cut to yesterday when I finally finished them:

Cute or what?

NOW kiddo thought we needed more...naturally, she's 3. So when hubby took me out for my birthday lunch, we stopped at Michael's to see if there happened to be any more. Nope, BUT we did find a FOAM kit. Ok we thought, it can't be that bad, right????

Oh how naive we were.....

Before- Please note the pieces
foam kit cover

Instructions- yes this is ALL of the instructions for 140 pieces.

Right- look at the pix closer.... please note- NO side views...

I saved you the pix of seeing 100 plus pieces all over the table. SIGH....

After 60 minutes of alot of muttering and 2 adults trying to get kiddo to understand our frustration. As you can see, there are side steps and rear braces, NOT shown in the instructions....SIGH

But after all that-it's totally adorable! YEAH! AND very very big! So no mantle for it! AND it looks adorable with a mini strobe in the back at night!

This post was delayed from yesterday.....

Did you realize it is only 58 DAYS til Christmas????

Which brings me to my next question- Have you thought about your Christmas cards yet? I know, you bought those cards last year after Christmas, on the 75% off table, but do you want to use them for your close friends and family, or do you want a personalized photo card?

If you do, then it's time to start looking and checking out different cards!

As a Pearista Reviewer for Pear Tree Greetings, I was recently given the opportunity to preview some of their new Christmas Cards for the year! I was very impressed and am looking forward to using them for my special Christmas cards this year!

My favorite is: Holiday Joy:  Even MORE photos- you can put the best on the front, then FOUR inside, AND a personalized message! AND you can pick the inside colors of the card! WOW.  holiday joy

I think my favorite card so far is : Bringing Joy to the World: I love the ability to put 4 photos on the card. I can never pick just ONE picture for my Christmas cards- I love this card for family as they can see more of your child/family!

And while my third choice doesn't have a photo, it's perfect for sending to Blog friends, for obvious reasons-ha ha, Delivering Dove :

AND if you order from Pear Tree Greetings, you should get your order within 4-9 business days, which includes 2 days for processing time. So you CAN procrastinate a little bit longer, or wait til you get that picture with Santa!

AND if you are having a Christmas party- they have wonderful Christmas party Invitations as well- here's my favorite:  Simply Merry:

AND don't forget the post-Christmas thank you cards! get your children involved over their vacation time, and help instill some great habits to last their lifetimes! I told you about some the other day, but here are some more that I love:

Product Review and Giveaway: Carmex Products and Travel Bag

## this giveaway is closed ##

welcome to fall yall button 2010

WOO-HOO! I got accepted as a Carmex Blog Squad member this past month (see cute little photo button the right sidebar) ! AND they sent me the coolest package of their products to review!Just in time to end the Welcome to Fall Ya'll Bonanza too!

carmex bag

This bag is a wonderful little travel bag that is perfect for putting all your tolietries and makeup in when traveling, as you can hang it on your door of your hotel room! AND then there was the full line of Carmex products! YEAH!
carmex review products

I've used Carmex as long as I can remember! Did you know that they're been in business since 1937? Well you would if you read the top label on the jars, ha ha, but like most of us you tear it open when you need it and don't read the top! Personally I was thrilled when they went to tubes from the jars!

carmex lotions
Even before I could get the array of products unloaded, my dad was pulling out Carmex’s new Healing Cream, which has NINE healing ingredients to help repair the driest, roughest skin!. Like a lotion, it is absorbed quickly, but it is thicker than regular lotion. It feels really nice going on and nice scent, with hint of vanilla.  Within minutes his legs seemed a bit softer and he has used it since with  pretty good success!

The second product we all tried was their new Carmex Healing Lotion. Like the healing cream, it is non-greasy and absorbs quickly. It has aloe and Vitamin E to really enrich your skin. I love the smell and have been using it on my elbows and they are feeling much softer already!

You can go to the Carmex website and you get a $2 off coupon to try either of the lotions for yourself! We highly recommend them!

Also included in the package was:
  • the Original and Cherry Lip Balm jars. I like leaving these in the cars, as unlike the tubes, they don't get too melted and icky! PLUS when they're warm, they are super smoothing on your lips! Did you know that they contain germ-killing menthol and phenol, which speeds the healing process of chapped lips?.
  • Original, Strawberry and Cherry Lip tubes-Carmex adds natural emollients to your lips, like Lanolin, while locking in your own body’s moisture to help protect against chapping and cracking.AND these tubes are perfect for putting in your pocket while out and about!
  • Original, Strawberry and Cherry Lip sticks- all claimed immediately by kiddo as HERS! Which I didn't mind, as I would rather she use a Carmex product than a cheap generic lip balm. This way I know she likes the taste and will put them on, protecting her lips, when she's outside and in the car!
  • Original, Peach and Pink Moisture Plus Lip Balms- WOW- I had never tried these and I am beyond sold on them! They are staying in MY purse! They go on like a lip stick and provide softening, protection AND a hint of color. AND they are perfect UNDER and OVER your lipstick to keep it from running! SERIOUSLY- I've tried it a couple of times and it's worked perfectly!  Plus they are SPF 15, so they provide you extra coverage!

That's ALOT or products! And guess what, they want to offer one of you the SAME package! Yup ALL of the products above AND the travel bag! YEAH!
