Book Review and Giveaway: Tales of Little Bear and Little Buffalo By Ray Naquin

** this giveaway is closed **

I am pleased today to offer a review of a book by a local author, involving our local Native American heritage!

Synopsis: Little Bear is a boy whose curiosity is matched only by his daring. He and his cousin, Little Buffalo, grow up in a changing world where they balance tradition - like earning the right to their own dugout canoes - with innovation, in the form of a new local schoolhouse. Little Bear's father is the tribal chief (of the Choctaw-Chitimacha Indian tribe who settled on Isle de Jean Charles just outside of Houma, LA), but that doesn't stop Little Bear from getting into mischief.

From acts of great bravery to gestures of deep compassion, Little Bear and Little Buffalo put themselves heart and soul into every moment of their lives, with contagious joy and spontaneous wisdom. Roy Naquin's beautiful storytelling retains the clarity, cadence, and humor of these delightful family stories told to him by his father and grandfather. Tales of Little Bear and Little Buffalo is a treasure for children and adults alike.

About the AuthorRoy Naquin was born in 1944 and was raised in New Orleans. He and his wife of forty-six years have four children, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. This is Roy's first book.

Review: This is a wonderful book of different stories about the two boys' adventures growing up. I know boys will really love this book and love the tales of the swamp and it's dangerous creatures! It is also a great book to explain the South Louisiana culture- that it is more than just the 'Cajun' that are so well talked about.

Naquin does a really great job of explaining the Chitcamacha customs, and how they interacted with the Cajun in the area, and how they all lived off the bountiful land of the Isle des Jean Charles. I think most kids will find his descriptions of daily life very interesting, and ones that will make history come alive for them!

SO I am quite happy to give this to one of my lucky readers, so that YOUR children can enjoy it!
