Book Review: Thawed Out & Fed Up by Ryan Brown

Cowboys, shootouts, damsels in distress, a damaged hero and a cryogenically frozen John Wayne – what more could you want from a novel!

Thawed Out & Fed Up cover
Synopsis: Sam Bonham—an unrepentant badass—is running from the law for a murder he doesn’t remember committing.  He high tails it out of modern-day East Texas and lands in Blistered Valley, an ersatz Wild West boomtown being held hostage by a lawless band of malevolent cow-pokes who fancy themselves cowboys. The town needs a hero and in an unexpected twist, Sam Bonham may yet become the man he was always meant to be with the help of the legendary John Wayne himself—the greatest cowboy who ever strapped on a set of spurs.

Still a man of true grit—and nowhere near as dead as everyone thought—the Duke is back and ready for a righteous fight. But he’s no longer the dashing figure of his Hollywood movie roles; he’s unrecognizable to everyone but Sam. Cryogenically frozen since 1979, in his “defrosted” state the Duke is showing his full seventy-two-years and is definitely the worse for wear. But his character still soars and he’s just  the man to show a guy like Sam how to cowboy up.  With John Wayne at his side Sam learns how to be a man and a hero—and a pretty good shot! He discovers how to save not only a town but his soul—and he’s hoping that’s enough to be worthy of winning back the love he left behind.

About the Author: Ryan is a former film and television actor and the author of Play Dead, an acclaimed thriller set in the world of Texas high school football. Raised in Texas, he lives in Manhattan with his wife and son.

Review: This was an interesting book- it was the perfect mix of old west novels and modern technology! The whole id of John Wayne getting frozen/unfrozen added a new twist to the tale! If you have someone who is a real western buff, they will love this book- it has all the plot points of a typical western novel- a town in trouble, soiled dove with a heart of gold, injured damsel in distress, evil cowboys, ineffective deputy...you get the idea!

Using John Wayne unthawed and waking to be one of the characters from his movies was an unique way to move the story along and show how ingrained the western stories are into our collective unconscious! This would be a great book to add to your Christmas list for all the Western lovers in your house and family!
