Book Review and Giveaway: The Mommy Diaries by Dallas Louis

The Mommy Diaries cover

Synopsis: What do you get when you mix a crawling toddler, a screaming baby, and a sudden craving for pickles and ice cream all over again?

Sheer panic, for starters.

After having three children within 26 months (none are twins- yes, you can breathe now), Dallas Louis’ life has been a non-stop circus. From nearly getting kicked out of Disneyland after her youngest tackled Cinderella, to being on a first name basis with her family orthopedic surgeon, Louis’ children and home life are a constant source of material – enough to fill this new book!

The Mommy Diaries chronicles the family life of an everyday mom trying to navigate the waters of parenting. Louis walks readers through her most embarrassing moments and some of her more bizarre emergency room trips. She also sheds light on the husband/wife dynamic and the twists and turns a marriage takes when kids (and household projects) enter the mix.

With chapters such as “You Shoved WHAT up Your Nose?” and “Why Some Animals Eat Their Young”, Louis shares her parenting lessons with a generous dose of humor. Through it all, she also shares her source of strength and the means by which she not only perseveres through her day, but also finds the joy amidst the chaos: God.

Review: I think I spent the first 3 chapters trying NOT to laugh so hard, I'd fall off the bed! Seriously.  Louis is just a mite sarcastic (ok, a whole lot), and her takes on early marriage, pregnancy and infanthood (yes I'm still shuddering thinking of 3 kids so close in age- ugh), are what we ALL thought, just never voiced. So yes, ALL EXPECTANT mothers NEED to read this book. Course they won't BELIEVE it, but after 2 months, they will thank you for giving them a life saving primer!

The first half of the book is pretty much about the kids and being a MOM, and is quite hilarious. The second half focusing on you as a partner to your husband. In this second half is when the Christian part of the book comes out. The author tones down the sarcasm (could be just that husband gives her less material than the three kids...) and honestly goes more on the preaching route. Like all marriage advice, what works for them, might not work for you. Honestly, I had less interest in this half and felt like it was better suited to newlyweds, although she doesn't aim it that way.

Overall I still like the book and think the first half should be required reading, if only to curtail your thoughts of trekking on a plane to Disney World with a 2,3 and 4 yr old in tow, sans husband (he came on a later flight). You can stop shuddering now. Be thankful Dallas and her kids made it through and learn from her! Check it out, you'll love it!
