Book Review: The Truth About Grace by John MacArthur

Is the experience of God’s grace in your life a thrilling thing? Just thinking about the fact that God, by His own sovereign plan, decided to be gracious to me is overwhelming. There is nothing greater than receiving grace upon grace.” —John MacArthur

The Truth About Grace cover

Synopsis:  Simple definitions can make grace feel like an obvious, even mundane, concept. Nothing could be further from the truth. Grace is the defining feature of the Christian faith. Once we understand how undeserving we are and how much favor we’ve been given, grace becomes shocking, thrilling, inspiring, and contagious. Best-selling author and pastor John MacArthur illuminates this profound concept with verse upon verse of Scripture. He also shows that misunderstandings about grace have led to some of the church’s greatest problems, perhaps because grace is her most precious gift.

For decades, MacArthur has encouraged countless Christians to develop a deeper understanding of the Bible and a greater respect for God’s truth. In The Truth About series, he now gathers his landmark teachings about core aspects of the Christian faith in one place. These powerful books are designed to give readers a focused experience that centers on God’s character and how it applies to their daily walk of faith.

Review: There are 3 books in this series: this one, The Truth About Forgiveness and The Truth About the Lordship of Christ. However, you do not need to read all of them, but they do compliment one another. This is a short book, at only 105 pages.

Grace is one of those words that gets bandied about by parishoners and pastors alike. But do we truly understand what the definition of 'grace' is, and how Christianity is defined by it? In this book, MacArthur easily, and with biblical references, shows us what that definition and understanding should be: God's unmerited favor-favor bestowed on us sinners, who deserve wrath. God's common grace restrains sin, and it's affect on the human race. Whereas God's Special grace saves, sanctifies and brings the soul to glory. Not as simple as you thought?

MacArthur is a hard hitter, and he spends time discussing how grace can be misunderstood, and used to fit the wanted needs of pastors and faiths. He pulls no punches, and calls out those who have mislead the faithful. Having faith and attending church will not bring you to God's grace- only giving oneself to God, and seeking his salvation, will bring you God's grace.

I highly recommend reading one chapter and talking about it, discussing it, mediating on it, before moving on. Otherwise, there may be just too much info coming out you- MacArthur packs a TON of info into 5 chapters! This book would be excellent for ANY bible discussion group- youth, men's or women's, as the idea of grace is central to any Christian faith.
