Synopsis:

When Sarah’s husband Jamie drowns, her young life if shattered and takes a turn that she never expected. Pregnant and now widowed, she reaches out to Jamie’s family for help but they are unwilling. Instead they devise a plan to have her kidnapped and taken to the Colonies to live a life of servitude for seven years.

She is deceived and taken aboard a ship headed for the Colonies to be sold, bound to unspeakable hardship and forced into the same world she left.

Caught in the talons of servitude, she falls in love with a young conscientious doctor, Alex Hutton, who has arrived in Virginia to care for his widowed sister in law and two young nieces. Called back to serve in Washington’s army, he promises he will return for her, gain her freedom and wed her. Other plans were made for Sarah when her owner finds himself bankrupt and sells her the first chance he gets. She’s taken out into the frontier, captured by Indians, and faces unbearable hardship. Sarah’s new life in the Colonies finds her surrounded by a family’s whirlwind of secrets, while she hopes the young doctor she loves with will bring her freedom.

Read the First Chapter!

This is Book 3 in Gerlach's The Daughters of the Potomac series- Before the Scarlet Dawn and Beside Two Rivers are Book 1 and 2, respectively.

Review: I LOVED this book- so much that I read it in ONE sitting! It is the perfect blend of historical fiction and romance. The story will keep you reading, as Sarah's life take it's many turns and changes, and you will be holding your breath to see what happens next and if she will finally get her happily ever after (which I won't tell you if she does/doesn't)! The author uses the historical backdrop to give an accurate setting for all the characters, and really tells the truth about the founding of America. You don't need to have read books 1 and 2 in the series, but after reading this one, I am looking forward to reading them! Kudos to the author, and make sure you give this book a try!

  1. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my novel, 'Beyond the Valley'. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I hope you'll read the other two books in the series. Sarah is in book I.

I loved writing this series, but I have to admit Beyond the Valley is my favorite out of the three. I have two other books out, and another novel will be published later in the spring.

    Fondly,
    Rita Gerlach
