Frozen Movie Review

Miss Grace has been BUGGING me to take her to Frozen, as soon as it open, so I did!

Frozen has been touted as the best Disney movie since Lion King,
so I was intrigued to see if it lived up to the hype!

Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

The film is directed by Chris Buck (“Tarzan,” “Surf’s Up”) and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter, “Wreck-It Ralph”), who also wrote the screenplay. It is produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Winnie the Pooh,” “The Princess and the Frog”).
Featuring original songs from Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit,” “Winnie the Pooh”) and Tony winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”), and an original score by Christophe Beck (“The Muppets,” Oscar®-winning short “Paperman”).

Here's a clip from the movie:
Over all the girls in the audience seemed more entranced with the movie, which makes sense as the 2 main characters are females. It reminded me of Tangled, in the naivety of Anna, yet she is more like Merida from Brave, in being willing to run off and save her sister. Miss Grace enjoyed the movie, but unlike Brave, she was not glued to the screen the whole movie. This was apparently a thought process shared by all the kids under the age of 8 in the theatre with us, as there was a lot of movement during the movie.
Call me cynical, but the core aspect of Lion King was that you left singing the songs, and being able to easily remember the choruses. Now the dinging in Frozen is spectacular- who knew Kristin Bell was classically trained in voice? And Idina Menzel has an amazing voice! The songs are gorgeous, but not something kids can easily sing. And that is where I think Disney has lost its way a bit. The songs from the last 8 Disney movies are great, but more adult orientated, and not kid friendly for singing.

But the Mom of a girl, is super happy to see the girls in these movies as no wallflowers, but willing to take the reigns and solve the problem of the day. The animation is flawless, and the dialogue keeps kids and adults watching. I think, like Princess and the Frog, this movie will grow more on both of us the more we watch it.All in all it was an enjoyable afternoon, and at least it's a safe movie to take your kids to!

  1. While it definitely will have the kids happier than the parents, they still won't feel bored, which is probably what matters most. Nice review Nicole.
