This month is the 50 th Anniversary of the film Mary Poppins- can you believe?
The new movie Saving Mr Banks, is about how the movie was made- check out this featurette:
What makes Mary Poppins so special?
The music? The story? The wonder?
The animation seems almost childlike now, with today's new computer animation, but the songs are timeless, as is the story. So it is no wonder everyone wants to see the movie, and celebrate the 50th Anniversary!
We've bought all the 'anniversary editions', and then donated the previous ones to the library as we've replaced them. But when cleaning out the DVD rack in order to decorate for Christmas, I found a 40th Anniversary edition that had the shrink wrap off, but had never been played.
So I decided we needed a Mary Poppins giveaway, as I'm sure some you (???) don't have it, or any copy of Mary Poppins yet!

The 40th edition set includes:a 2 discs that include wonderful extras and a vivid new print and sound presentation of the film. The commentary track is an great combination of new tracks (including Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews having a great time together), along with archival materials. There's a fun 50-minute documentary parents will really enjoy, and a created-for-kids "Movie Magic" extra. The red carpet footage of the world premiere has been restored with vivid color (like the slipcase booklet below). A deconstructing a special-effects sequence-shows how much simpler the effects were in some ways, harder in others, than current techniques. There is also rehearsal footage, that is wonderful to view (can you believe this was Julie Andrew's FIRST film?). Even the sound has been reconstructed for the movie, giving it new complexities! This is more like the movie originally was!
