SambaMD Back Relief Wheelchair Pillow Product Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
Disclosure / Disclaimer: I received this product, free of charge, from BodyRyzm LifeSciences / Perspectis, Inc., via Tomoson, or review purposes on this blog. No other compensation, monetary or in kind, has been received or implied for this post. Nor was I told how to post about it.

Yup- it's alternative pillow week here at BTHM!

If the name above sounded familiar, it's because BodyRyzm is also the maker of the Qi Pillow, which we have reviewed (and given away) here on this blog!

According to American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 30% American adults are afflicted by back pain. AND that number is only going to increase as the Baby Boomer generation ages! Wheelchair users are often among those who suffer from back pain, because sitting is a leading cause for back pain, second only to heavy weight lifting, according to Workers Safety and Insurance Board.
Our body is not built to remain still for prolonged periods. Did you know that? Most people don't! As soon as we sit still for twenty minutes, the deep stabilizing muscles in our lower back will begin to tense up, which often leads to stiffness, pain and fatigue in the lower back. Furthermore, physical inactivity of sitting has been linked with many health issues including poor equilibrium, obesity, cardio vascular disease, even cancer and premature death.

We all know the importance of physical activity to our body. However, all traditional wheelchair cushions, including higher end ROHO and Jay cushions, have been primarily designed for users who have lost their core stability. They do not accommodate the wheelchair users’ need to move while sitting in wheelchairs, as is often the case with those with moderate back injuries or due to leg problems only. This is where the SambaMD comes in and makes a difference!

With the SambaMD pillow you literally get double performance results, over traditional higher-end wheelchair cushions. Like the Qi Pillow, it has an internal, adjustable cushion that can be easily adjusted to the depth that the user needs, in mere minutes! Like the Qi Pillow, it has an air valve that can be blown into to adjust the inner pillow.

This inner pillow is what makes the difference! Like the Qi Pillow, it allows for improved sitting comfort and prevents back stiffness, pain and fatigue, from tensing muscles. If your back can’t stop fidgeting while sitting, your back is telling you that it is not getting the right seating device it needs, it needs to move and it needs a dynamic seat that can move with you, which the SambaMD allows for!.

It is not only proven to help wheelchair users reduce and prevent back stiffness, pain and fatigue, it also helps wheelchair users relieve pressure/pain on coccyx and hemorrhoid or prostate while sitting. Frequently these issues go hand in hand with severe back pain!

Mom was not into being my poster child, so the kid filled in, so you could see how the pillow looked in real life, and see the actual depth. I didn't realize our wheelchair was the oversized edition. Normally the SambaMD pillow would fit edge to edge on a regular sized wheelchair. It's dimensions ar16" (depth) x 18" (width) x 2.5" - 4" (adjustable thickness). We actually did NOT have to change the thickness for Mom. But as she said, if she had to sit longer than an hour, she probably would increase the thickness some. My mother and I both sat in the chair, with the pillow for over an hour, and we can tell you it definitely makes a HUGE difference.Less squirming, and your core muscles don't feel as stressed.

If you have a loved one who has to wheelchair, even if it is even for only an hour at a time, you need to consider getting one of these pillows, to provide them with a comfortable seat, that makes their time in the wheelchair not only more tolerable, but better on their body! The SambaMD wheelchair cushion has also been proven for reimbursement (under E2622) by Medicaid and Medicare.

Thanks for reading this post!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
