Synopsis:

Award winning and best selling author Carole P. Roman travels to beautiful Portugal. This pro active book invites children to think about Portugal's many wonders from the sunny Azores to the wide variety of food. Roman's If You Were Me books have a simple, winning formula: portray children from other countries and explain how familiar items and customs are the same, and how they differ, in the country being discussed...

Review:

We have talked about Portugal before, with other travel books, so some of the info in this book was a review for Miss Grace, and she delighted in finding things that we celebrate here at home as well, like:

With the World Cup underway when this book came in, she was quite interested in this page! We had a long discussion on why soccer isn't called futebol here in the US!

Something that is common to Louisiana, Mardi Gras, aka carnival, was the next discussion:

If You Were Me and Lived in ...Portugal sample 2

It was fun to discuss the similarities and differences between out Mardi Gras and the Portugese carnevale! We also talked about how some words were the same in Spanish, and others were similar, but a little different.

This was another fun book and Miss Grace adores this series and how it lets her discover other countries and their cultures, and a comfortable level of understanding for her. They are great conversation starters, and we frequently end up checking out other things about the country in question as well, when reading this series! I know this series will come in quite handy when she has to start doing social study reports! We recommend everyone have them as references in their homes!

And hint hint Carole, Miss Grace would love to see Ireland come up before next year's Summer Irish Dance Camp (apparently she wasn't all that thrilled with my Irish Cultural/History lesson, shesh, some kids-LOL)!
