We all know the lyrics-they are embedded in our Christian consciousness-

Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above

With wisdom, power, and love, Our God is an awesome God

But do you know anything about the man behind those lyrics?

Releasing this week, RAGAMUFFIN is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with his own darkness tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he struggled with success in Nashville and depression in Wichita, Rich desired most of all to live a life of honest and reckless faith amidst a culture of religion and conformity.

About Rich Mullins:

Singer and songwriter Richard Wayne “Rich” Mullins was best known for his worship song “Awesome God” which has been embraced as modern classics by many Christians. His music has been covered by many artists, including Caedmon’s Call, Amy Grant, Jars of Clay, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, John Tesh, and Hillsong United. Mullins’ musical career formally began with Zion Ministries in the late 1970s, where he wrote music and performed with a band called Zion.  Mullins first solo hit, “Awesome God,” appeared on his third album and brought his music to a wider audience. Rich Mullins was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) on April 29, 2014.

Review:

This DVD is part documentary and part movie. It tells the story of Rich's life, in flashbacks, as he is being interviewed about how became to be Christian. The cinematography is gorgeous and partially tells the story all by itself.Artists tend to have tortured souls, and the movie shows how Rich's began when he and his father couldn't bond over farming, and later how his music wasn't accepted by his teachers at Bible College, and how his girlfriend set off his rise to fame, and the beginning of his despair, by submitting his songs to Amy Grant(Sing Your Praise to the Lord, which made her album the best selling Christian album to to that time).

Mullins was born to be a modern minister. He came at a time when Christian music was on the cusp of changing- he was ahead of his time in ministering to people through music. He was a round peg being shoved into a square hole,of a music industry that had a set form, that he rebelled against/ Intuitively Rich knew there was another way to reach people, and music was the key- that by sharing emotion and love of Christ in an HONEST way, would draw people in, and to his albums. Watching the film, you have to wonder at how the Christian music industry was changed by his refusal to bow down to the format, and how things could be so different, if they had just been more willing to change sooner. After all, how many million dollar singers go BACK to college to get a music degree, so they can go teach kids on a reservation? He was a man ahead of his time, and the world lost a great teacher when he died. This is a valuable film to watch with your family, especially teens,to disucssion how our actions are in line with bible teachings, and the truth of what jesus wants from us.
