Laundry...

The bane of Back to school, isn't it?

All those extra uniforms, underwear and sportswear?

Sigh. But how often do we stop and THINK about what is in our detergent?

Like most of us, you probably haven't had to, until you, or a family member, had an unknown allergy reaction, and then you had to check, right?

Many consumer branded laundry detergents contain toxic ingredients.  Whether it’s Diethanolamine, Quaternium-15, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or some other chemical, it’s a good idea to understand the harmful potential that ingredients such as these can pose to you and your family.

But what about potentially harmful ingredients NOT shown on the label?  Particularly Dioxane (1,4-dioxane). The Organic Consumers Association says: 1,4-Dioxane is a by-product of the process called ethoxylation, a cheap shortcut process many companies use to provide mildness (to reduce skin irritation) to harsh cleaning ingredients. This process requires the use of the cancer-causing petrochemical ethylene oxide, which generates 1,4-Dioxane as a by-product.”Many top laundry detergent brands contain this synthetic petrochemical which the Environmental Protection Agency considers a probable carcinogen..  This is a by-product contaminant of the manufacturing process and is therefore not required to be listed on product labels.

I know, I was SHOCKED about that too!

There are safer alternatives in the market place that work just as well as major consumer brands, without even a trace of 1,4 Dioxane!

I recently got to try out Green Virgin’s Soap Nuts Liquid Laundry Detergent, which is one of those products!.

“Soap Nuts Liquid is made with our USDA Certified Organic Sapindus Mukorossi Soap Nuts (a berry that grows on the Chinese Soap Berry Tree and has the highest saponin (surfactant) content of any plant). Gren Virgin extracts the saponin using only water. Then they remove all the solids and tannins, and deodorize it. All of that is done using high tech filters and using only water. This is an important step and one that most of our competitors are not capable of.”

Because this is the extract of a fruit, it has a short shelf life of about two weeks, so Green Virgin had to find a SAFE preservative. They eventually found a pair of non-toxic preservatives
(caprylyl glycol and phenethyl alcohol), that when combined, make a non-toxic and extremely effective preservative. They are rated a 0 and a 1 on the Skin Deep Data Base--which is about as non-toxic as you can get!  So now the liquid has at least a two year shelf life,  and costs well below the leading brands in terms of cost per laundry load because you get 120-240 loads per bottle. Yes I said that much! You only need a aquirt from the small container to do a LARGE load of clothes!

I was really surprised at how WELL the soap worked! I started with towels and worked by way up to delicates. With every load, the clothes were CLEAN and SOFT. Yup- you don't need any fabric softener or dryer sheets when you use this detergent! Which is great for towels, because both of those take away your towel's ability to absorb water by blocking fibers! I'm still stunned how well it works! But it is a great reminder that our ancestors didn't have modern detergents, yet got their clothes clean by using what nature offered them! And if you use this detergent,  you’ll be doing the earth a favor,as it actually has a negative carbon footprint! How many products can say that?

  1. I love Soap Nuts liquid detergent. I recently ran out and used my "regular" detergent. My skin is not liking it right now. I have to order some more Soap Nuts right away! Plus, my clothes don't feel as clean.
