Have you started your Spring planting yet?

I know, I know, you're thinking, but it's not even Halloween yet!

But when it comes to Spring bulbs, NOW is the time to plant them, before the gold weather gets here!

And to make it easy for you, Longfield Gardens has come up with some lovely flower pairs, that are packaged together, along with planting diagrams, to give you a burst of color to wow your neighbors and bring gorgeous flowers (and their scent) into your home in the early Spring!

The combinations are called Perfect Pairs and they have 16 combinations for you to choose from!

I was sent their Perfect Pairs Tulip Mystic Van Eijk and Muscari Armeniacum combination to 'preview'. I say that as obviously, they bulbs won't sprout and bloom til Spring! I received 25 of the beautiful color-changing Van EijkTulip (a lovely pink tulip with huge flowers on tall stems) and 50 of the Muscari Armeniacum (also known as grape hyacinths). Professional landscapers often plant a combination of Darwin Hybrid tulips and grape hyacinths, as the combination gives you a two-level, two-color planting, guaranteed for a big, long-lasting display with little effort (that's something all is busy parents love!).

As you can see, it is a STUNNING combination!

Muscari Armeniacum, aka Grape hyacinths are easy-to-grow and their color complements every other spring flower. The cobalt blue bells open slowly from the bottom up so the flowers last for weeks. They are very fragrant too! Muscari naturilize well and they look great planted along pathways, at the front of flower beds,at your landscape's edge, or even in a container pot.

Tulip Mystic Van Eijk are a lovely coral pink tulip, with accents of darker pink and apricot. Like all Darwin hybrids, Mystic Van Eijk's flowers are extra large and long-lasting. A popular choice for mass plantings, they make excellent cut flower!

For convenience sack, I went ahead and opened both bags of bulbs and placed them in the box they came in. This is easier when you're sitting on the ground planting, than trying to reach into bags to pull them out, when you have gardening gloves on!

I opted to divide up the bulbs and put 3/4 of them around the bird feeder/banner pole. The tulips were in the center around the pole base, and then 3 rows of the muscari on the outer layers. I laid them all out, as you can see, to get the pattern I wanted, and then went back and dug the 6" and 4" holes for them, respectively, and placed them in. I did use some blood meal to help feed them, as we always do when plating blooms, and after a heavy top soil, I placed some pine straw on top, as we are expecting 40 degree weather next week. I then used the remaining bulbs to go around a crepe myrtle tree in the front yard. Together, they should give us an amazing flower display (I will update you in the Spring!). Out of both packs of bulbs only ONE bulb has issues in transit. pretty good for 75!
