Review:

It's ahrd to believe that this is the FIRST cookbook that McGuire's has published in its 35 years! But it is, and they definitely saved up a whole lot of great recipes!

After I got to the 24th page I had marked to try a recipe for, I realized I was just going to have to start cooking the entire book! Many of the recipes are very similar to our family's recipes, but there are some minute differences, that can take the taste up a notch or two. From their breads, to the hamburgers, to the condiments, to the side dishes, to drinks, I dare you to NOT be able to bookmark at least 25 recipes to try! This is a cookbook that once you start looking through it, you realize it could pretty much be your primary cook book! The recipes are pretty easy to follow, very few have ingredients that you either don't have in your pantry, or that aren't found at your local box or grocery store. The food ranges from very simple to more fancy, but not too fancy.

For those who have loved eating at either of the Pub's location, this cookbook is a must have. For those looking for great Irish Pub style recipes, you gotta get this book. And for the foodies that just want a super cookbook, pick this one up for Valentine's or St Patrick's Day gifting! Your recipient will love you for it!

And now for a sample recipe!

About the Owners:

Mcguire and Molly opened the original Mcguire's Pub in 1977, after they got married, moving it to it's current location, an old firehouse, in 1982. McGuire's grandmother ran an Irish saloon in Philadelphia and his father owned a steakhouse in South Jersey. Molly came from Kentucky, but together they were a team that took a simple pub to international fame. Molly started the tradition of signing dollar bills and putting them on the pub's walls, and was known for her Irish singing. In 1996 they opened a second location in Destin.  Molly died this past August and the entire Gulf Coast mourned the loss of the energetic hostess. McGuire turned the cooking over to his son, Jim,and together the menu has gone through some changes, but the positive reviews and awards keep coming, so the McGuire tradition is well in hand! The McGuires had eight children, twenty-four grandchildren, and eight great-grand children!

About the Author:

A former New York advertising executive, author Jessie Tirsh moved to New Orleans after a visit to Jazz Fest in 1988. Tirsh has combined her love for food and her infatuation with the Crescent City into writing cookbooks. Having worked with renowned chefs Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme, Tirsch understands the culinary blend of technical proficiency and bold flavors that is characteristic of Southern cuisine.

Giveaway:

One BTHM reader will win this fun book of postcards showing kitschy scenes from Mcguire's Irish Pub! Those who would like to share the pub's whimsy may send postcards of the brewery bar, a painting of Cousin Nathan's first wife (in the buff!), or the really buff skeleton of Bridget McGuire. Or they might just decide that the cards are too nice to send and keep them for themselves.
Then, again, if they want to tell someone where to really go, they can send a postcard of one of McGuire's infamous, “mislabeled” restroom doors.
