lil yat and friends

My NOLA peeps knew exactly what I meant when I said Yat, but the rest of you MIGHT be a tad confused, So let me explain:

In NOLA, a frequent expression is "where y'at?", meaning "how are you". This and other unique phrases have come to embody what is know as the NOLA Yat dialect. With it's roots in the German  and Irish (AHA a March tie in!) NOLA communities, it's slang has spilled out to the greater NOLA area. To the point where if you ask someone if they are a Yat, they'll answer in the affirmative, if they're from NOLA!

I was thrilled recently to win a set of Lil Yat books to complete Miss Grace's set, and to share with friends.

Don;t know the books?

Author Rhonda JohnsonValladares and her brother Kurt Johnson have taken this term and made a series of adorable kids books, featuring the Yat Pak, with strong roots in the NOLA community. The stories star Lil Yat, (a crawfish) his friend Yatty Girl (a Pelican), Drexel (an alligator) and Yatty Boy (a frog). The Yat Pack travel all over NOLA to places like the Aquarium, River Front and City Park, as well as having wonderful Pirate, Dinosaur, Dream time and Swamp adventures. There is also a special Christmas book!

Rhonda makes appearances at local bookstores along with one of her Lil Yat friends, for some very special reading times! Due to the popularity of the Lil Yat books, Rhonda and her brother decided to start a coordinating coloring book line, and there are 5 of those books also available, so your kids can color their own scenes of NOLA!

About the Lil Yat creators:

Rhonda Johnson Valladares (author) and Kurt Johnson (Illustrator) are native to “New Orleans.”  Rhonda and Kurt grew up with two brothers and one sister in Uptown New Orleans.  As kids, they enjoyed the many trips to Audubon and City Park with such attractions as Monkey Hill, the Zoo and Storyland. Rhonda always had a passion for writing while Kurt had an interest in art illustration.

However, life took them each in different directions. After graduating from college Rhonda worked in management for many years while Kurt followed in his father’s footsteps and served in the U. S. Navy.  But the passions for writing and Illustrating still loomed in this sister/brother pair.  When Kurt retired from the military he returned home to the “Big Easy.” At that time, Rhonda reignited the artistic spark in him with the hope of bringing her writings to life.  This is how Lil’ Yat’s Adventures began.
