I never thought I’d be a novelist.

It’s not that I didn’t ever write. I was a newspaper columnist in Boston, a non-fiction author writing about television history, and a documentary TV producer.  But novels?  I hadn’t given it a thought…until 9/11.

September 11, 2001, I was in New York ready to pitch new TV show ideas to History Channel and A&E.

But the shattering events of the day changed life as we know it.  Forever.

My business partner and I rented a car the next day at Westchester County Airport and we began a long drive back to Los Angeles, barely talking, always reflective, profoundly concerned. I started thinking about the plot to bring the great twin towers down; from the patience and planning to what brings people to do horrific things.  I wondered how such hatred could be born and nurtured, mature and eventually lead to execution.  Yes, execution is the right word.

There’s so much we don’t know on a purely street level.  Certainly psychiatrists and sociologists have studied hate.  Parents, teachers and clergy deal with it because they have to.  But for me to understand –  to grasp the ends to the means and the means to the ends that people will go to – I decided to create  fictional characters who could tell me about the real world.  Executive Actions was the result of that decision on the ride home to Los Angeles.

My first political thriller was followed by two others in the series, Executive Treason and Executive Command.

In essence, I established a new career as a novelist to put into focus the world around me.

Research, interviews, and the news gave me grounding.  But my characters, good and bad, provided the answers.

Now with the release of OLD EARTH, once again by Diversion Books, I went down another path, or perhaps better noted, I took on another question.  Creating an interwoven story around a discovery Galileo made in the mountains of Italy in 1601 with contemporary paleontologists on a dinosaur dig in Montana, I explored the issues of Earth’s age in a mystery that spans all time.  OLD EARTH helped me understand the different points of view that engage the public and the pulpit.  But the book is in no way a heavy read. It’s an adventure driven by a secret organization trying to keep the lid on earth’s most guarded secret.

Once again, writing allowed me to understand things through characters who had the job of figuring it all out.  They did the hard work.  I literally took dictation from them through a globe-hopping story that puts an ultimate question squarely on the table:  What one secret could change life as we know it?  And if you discovered it, what would you do with the knowledge?

Of course, you’ll have to read OLD EARTH to find out what happens.  Through the pages and unfolding drama, I think you’ll clearly see why I like to write.  It gives me the way to constantly learn, to discover and to process things and make them relevant and relatable.

Thank you for inviting me to share my thoughts here at Bless Their Hearts Mom.  I hope every one will check out OLD EARTH.  It’s published by Diversion Books and available in print, eBook and Audible editions.  Let me know what you think!

  1. What a great story (though it took a tragic turn of events to get you started). Thanks so much for sharing your history as a novelist with us.
