And now a new cd, from a woman you might lnow as half the duo of The Civil Wars, that comes out at the end of this month:

In 2012 The Civil Wars, Joy Williams and John Paul White took a hiatus from recording, and eventually broke up last year. During that time, Joy had a baby and was able to be home, off the road, to enjoy the little moments of infanthood and marriage.

With her new solo album (why do we still call them that, if they are on CD? just asking...), Joy wanted to share her story- a very personal honest look at those 2 years and what she went through.

Track Listing:

1. Before I Sleep
2. Sweet Love of Mine
3. Woman (Oh Mama)
4. One Day I Will
5. Not Good Enough
6. What a Good Woman Does
7. Until the Levee
8. You Loved Me
9. The Dying Kind
10. Till Forever
11. Welcome Home

Here's a video of one the singles from the album. Joy says, “The entire song is what it’s like to experience the beauty, the spark and strength of what it is to be inside your skin. It’s a song with energy and fire. I wanted to own the complexity and the three-dimensional aspect of what it is to be a woman. ‘I am a universe wrapped in skin’—That’s one of my favorite lines from the new album. I’m excited about being a woman. I’m excited to be where I am now, who I am now.:

Review:

I was a huge fan of The Civil Wars- their haunting melodies, verse and songs stayed with you long after the music ended, so I was really looking forward to reviewing this cd!  It very much brings to mind Alanis Morisette or Sarah McLachlan- with her feelings raw and exposed. There is a growth on the album, which I am sure is due to motherhood, and the many ways it changes your view on the world around you. She shows once again why she has 4 Grammy awards to her credit- the album is an eclectic mix of songs that vary in emotional feel, context and rhytms. I have to admit my favorite song on the album is Woman (from the video above), because of its NOLA flavored beats. While the video is nice, NOLA residents will sense more of a vodoo/swamp flavor needed! LOL. Before I Sleep and Until the Levee, will also resound for those who loved the sounds of The Civil WarTs. What a Good WOman Does delves into the band breakup itself. The album takes Joy further from her Christian roots (did you realize that Joy was the same artist that released 10 Christian albums (LPs and EPs)? Yup! So this is really her 4th solo album.) in some ways, yet brings her back in others. The album will resonate with many women, as it is the tale of a woman letting go and moving on to the next step in her life, with verve and glee.
