Synopsis

A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the front lines in Afghanistan alongside his handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. But when things go terribly wrong on maneuvers, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service. Sent stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin, so Max is saved when he is adopted by Kyle’s family. But Justin has issues of his own, including living up to his father’s expectations, and he isn’t interested in taking responsibility for his brother’s troubled dog. However, Max may be Justin’s only chance to discover what really happened to his brother that day on the front, and with the help of Carmen, a tough-talking young teen who has a way with dogs, Justin begins to appreciate his canine companion. Justin’s growing trust in Max helps the four-legged veteran revert back to his heroic self, and as the pair race to unravel the mystery, they find more excitement—and danger—than they bargained for. But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other.

Review:

When this movie came out at the theatre I opted not to take Miss Grace, as I was worried the war scenes on the big screen, as well as certain canine teeth scenes, being too large would give her nightmares. So I was very happy to watch it with her on DVD, at home in a quieter setting, where I could stop it and explain things, as necessary (which I did have to do twice).

The movie is actually really great for family night, as it really delves into the spirit of 'ohana' which most kids know from the Disney cartoon movie, and how it relates to the relationship between Max and Kyle, and then to Kyle's family and Max. Note- adults may need some tissues handy during the funeral scene. However that scene, really brought home to Miss Grace, WHY Kyle's family need to not leave Max behind and bring him home, where Kyle would have wanted him to be.

The movie also delves into how parents and children see each other, and how misconceptions can cause issues and separation, where it shouldn't be. Ultimately this movie is really about the love of a family, and always standing by each other, and having faith that they will be there for you. It was a great movie for discussion, and parents will teens may get more out of it, as far as talking their own family values and issues out. But it is also an enjoyable movie, with a cast that might surprise you, and we highly recommend it!
