Since we were talking about a different take on a childhood favorite earlier today, it only makes sense to share about this new book coming out in January!
Synopsis:
Gretel―yes, that Gretel―is now all grown up and working as a private investigator in 18th century Bavaria. Her professional interest is piqued when she begins to hear whispers of of mysterious goings-on off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein: sailors are disappearing, and there are rumors of mermaids and sea creatures and all manner of slippery, sea-based happenings. Ordinarily, Gretel’s interest in sea-life does not extend beyond that which is edible, doused in butter and garlic, and already on the plate before her. However, funds are low, and the captain of the ship Arabella makes a tempting offer of good pay and a free cruise in return for her detective services. With a splendid new wig packed, Hans as her bodyguard on the journey north, and the promise of two weeks of fine dining and erudite company whilst sailing around the picturesque Friesian islands, what could possibly go wrong?
Review:
Whereas the DVD we talked about earlier was family fare, this is definitely an adult or older YA novel! It is wickedly snarky, full of satire and references, that adults will instantly pick up on and laughing hysterically over. Seriously, this is not the book to read while waiting in the doctor's office lobby- they might think you're insane with all the laughing you'll be doing! It's a fun take on mixing fairy tale characters into the modern world, and a decent mystery, to take you away from the new year resolution doldrums! Book mark this one, or snag a pre-publication purchase and laugh your way into the new year! And you might want to snag books 1 (Gretel and the case of the Missing Frog Prints- free giveaway on Good Reads, if you're a member!) and 2 (Once Upon a Time), in the series, to hold you over til its release date (Jan. 25th)

P. J. Brackston is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Witch's Daughter; The Winter Witch; and Nutters. She is also the author of Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints, available from Pegasus Books. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Lancaster University and is a Visiting Lecturer for the University of Wales, Newport. Brackston lives in Wales with her partner, Simon, and their two children.
Even before you said that this was an adult YA novel I really wanted to read it and find out about the grownup Gretel. It really sounds like a cute, quick read and full of satire and dry with that I love. I'll def be keeping my eyes out for this one!
