Living the American Dream in France

pancakes in paris cover

Synopsis:

Any expat knows the unique frustration of not being able to find American staples like peanut butter and pumpkin pie abroad. But thanks to Craig Carlson and his restaurant Breakfast in America, it’s now possible to get hearty pancakes and creamy milkshakes in the heart of Paris, the city of croissants and crepes.

Carlson was the last person anyone would expect to open a restaurant in Paris. For one, he’s not French. He had no experience running any sort of business, and he had no idea how to navigate the notorious French bureaucracy. But what he did have was determination and a dream. Pancakes in Paris combines delightful tales of humor and hope with the satisfaction of an old-fashioned American breakfast.

Review:

I think everyone has been where Craig was- moderately successful and happy in their job, but at the same time, knowing something is missing. That the 'dream' job isn't really that.

Craig realized and this and then what his dream job was. Only unlike most of us, he decided to take charge and MAKE it happen. With a lot of faith, some mistrust along the way, and inherent goodness of people, his dream suddenly became a reality- bringing a true diner breakfast to Paris. Where not only expats and tourists, but the locals, could find escape from too much fresh  pan de chocolat!

Along the way Craig had to deal with 'de Mouse', French banks and liquor mafia, a British rock group, French bureaucracy (his first arrest!) and realizing that he was home, that Paris really had stolen his heart, and no matter what he WOULD make it work. Today he has not 1, but 3 Breakfast in Ameruca locations in Paris, all as equally busy as the other, and found happiness!

This was a fun book to read, Craig is a great storyteller (thanks to his days as a screenwriter) and he has some stories to tell! Just don't read this book on an empty stomach, otherwise you'll be heading to the kitchen to cook! And luckily for you, Craig was kind enough to include recipes!
