You may remember that I reviewed The Ultimate Book of Whiskey about 2 years ago. This year, Parragon has taken that book and put it into a gift set, perfect for holiday and birthday gifting!
The Ultimate Book of Whisky provides a fascinating introduction to the most renowned whiskies from around the world. Including more than 200 of the finest whiskies each entry is accompanied with color photography, historical information and detailed tasting notes describing the appearance, style and unique flavors of the whisky. The accompanying Tasting Notes book enables you to write down your impressions of a whisky, capture unique flavors, and mention those characteristics that make the whisky distinctive. This key information will help you remember the whisky in the future and build up a record of the drams you have tasted.
"This book gives you a history of whiskey, how it is made, why is it whiskey or whiskey and how the aging process is the key, before it gets into the actual whiskeys from around the world. Sections are devoted to North America, Scotland, Ireland, Japan and the rest of the world! If you have never really thought about how whiskey is made, the first section is really interesting and breaks down the process with lots of great comments about the differences between how rules and regulations affect how whiskey is made.
This book gives history of each distillery, and for the more famous ones, additional info on them, along with some pretty amazing color photos. The book also shows the different primary whiskeys offered, and noted the flavor differences and ages. No whiskey is denoted as better than another- rather you find out which ones are taking the International Whiskey awards. The book then lets you make up your mind as to which whiskey you want to check out."
And that is where the Tasting Book comes in! You get a brief how to on tasting whiskey, when 97 slots for tasting different whiskies and adding a photo or the label, much like you get in a wine tasting book. It is a hardback book, with great photos interspersed with the tasting notes, to give you a book that would be at home on your coffee table. This isn't a book to hide away, but to show off!
This is a great box set, perfect for holiday gift giving for friends and family, or for a host or boss present! Add one of the bottles of whiskey from the book, and you have a great gift that can start off a great hobby!
Since it is Friday, you need a recipe to get you through the hot still Summer, thought it's Back to School Days, so how about a great frozen Irish Coffee, that you can lace with ANY of the whiskeys form this book?
1 oz Irish whiskey
1 oz espresso or dark roast brewed coffee
1/2 oz simple syrup (dissolve 2 parts sugar to 1 part water in boiling water, then cool before use)
2 oz milk or cream
1 generous scoop of vanilla ice cream
5 large ice cubes
crumbled chocolate cookies (I like to use frozen chocolate mint cookies for an extra lift)
or grated chocolate
Blend all of the ingredients in a blender until totally combined. Then serve with a topping of chocolate cookie crumbles or grated chocolate, if desired.
