Book Review/Giveaway/CLOSED: Career Comeback by Lisa Johnson Mandell

Sometimes you get asked to review a book that you don’t need right now, or that you’re not sure would be a good fit on your site, but then you think it might benefit at least one of your readers and you go ahead and say ok, send it on. Hopefully when you get those books you find something really great in them after all and you can;t wait to tell everybody. THIS is one of those books!

Hachette sent me Career Comeback by Lisa Johnson Mandell to review and giveaway, and I am SO glad they did!

Getting older can be a career killer. That's what entertainment journalist Lisa Johnson Mandell discovered when she sent out a resume that made her sound like an aged veteran. Her new career makeover guide (expanded from the Wall Street Journal article about revamping her "older" image to land her dream job)acknowledges that experience matters, but looking and acting up-to-date matter just as much.

Today’s market place and job world is very fast paced and the effects of multi-generations are being felt.  Lisa’s descriptions of the Silent Generation (born before 1946), Baby Boomers (born between 1946-1963) , Generation X (born between 1964-1979), Generation Y (1980-1995) and Millennials (enter workplace starting in 1999) were 100% on target. Anyone who has trained people from different era, or will HAVE to train them will get a world of information from this one chapter that will help them in devising their training to better FIT the different ages.  Fun fact: during the next 20 years, 76 million Americans will retire. Only 46 million will replace them-most from Generation Y! Want to wonder about Social Security now?  :)

Lisa doesn’t so much as direct you to change how you think/act as much as she urges you to keep educating and reinventing yourself to fit the needs of your job now, or the job that you WANT. Her perfect example is she was between major jobs and started an entertainment news blog. Using the strengths, knowledge and connections, she already had as an entertainment reporter, she was able to fashion her strengths into a new area for herself. And suddenly the job offers came rolling in and then she was able to sell the blog only TWO months after she started it for much more than it cost her to put in online, AND she got hired to run that company’s new website.

Lisa provides ten strategies for putting a youthful spin on resumes, Web pages, and personal presentation.
  • reality check- what are you looking for? Change in what you were doing or not? What makes you happy? GO FOR IT
  • know what you’re up against- differences among generations will help you understand the marketplace you will be re-entering and dealign with
  • refresh yourself-be current- know pop culture, what twitter, Hulu, etc are. You’ll more than likely need to use them/know about them in your job
  • look the part-you don’t want to look like you’re from 1950 when applying for a job that deals with websites. The marketplace is youth-orientated and you don’t have to look YOUNG, just more with current trends and not a refugee from 1950.
  • create a brand new you-you want to stand out as a one-of-a kind not to be missed, standout form everyone else out there.
  • shine online-get a personal blog or Facebook or Myspace page up and current. Not only does it provide more interest in YOU as a brand, but allows you to put things on it that aren’t included in your resume, but will impress future employers. Also shows how with pop-culture you are!
  • make the social net work-USE the social networks to get your revised resume out there in places you might not have thought of before. We really are separated by 6 degrees of separation- social networking proves it!
  • botox your resume- this is THE biggie- if you’re older, you more than likely have a 2-3 page resume. That’s a page/page and a half too much! Future employers don’t need to know ALL about previous jobs, they want to know about the ones that make you special to them. Looking at her examples, it’s amazing the difference editing for the job in question makes your resume- this chapter alone is worth buying the book!
  • interview like a rock star-be cool, capable and confident. Her 12 things to remember are great for ANYONE, no matter how much experience they have, for going into a job interview (hint hint- have your teens read it!)
  • know your rights and wrongs-age and sex discrimination is not as prevalent as you may think anymore, but it is important to know what the laws are
Overall this is a GREAT book to rethink your current job, one that you want to apply for, or to even just be thinking about for a few years from now (ie if you’re a few years from retirement). There is also great advice to give to teens and college graduates to help them prepare for what awaits them in job interviews.

Check it out today- you won’t be sorry!
