Do you know what the Dead Sea Scrolls are? This fascinating DVD from IMP will definitely teach you if you don't know!
In 1947 the first of over 900 scrolls were found by chance in caves in the Judean desert, by a Bedouin shepherd.Written in Hebrew and Aramaic, they are among the oldest manuscripts EVER found (they are over 2000 years old), and contain the oldest versions of Biblical texts, 1000 years older than any that had been previously known. Most of made of papyrus or parchment, and were found in clay pottery jars. It is amazing that they survived at all!
Researchers had to piece many of the scrolls together, as they fell apart when unrolled. many still have missing pieces. Researchers have found 23 of the 24 books of the Old Testament (the Book of Esther is the exception),many non-biblical (Apocrypha) texts and Sectarian manuscripts (full of community rules and beliefs for the sects of the time). The Apocrypha texts are very interesting and give counterpoints to the way the Christian faiths tenets(rules) today. Anyone interested in biblical study and history should read the Qumran texts (many books out there with translations) and the Nag Hammadi texts (found in Egypt in 1945, also available in many translations), as they give a better understanding of the times and people!
While we did not purchase this IMP set, we had already received this sample video and I was impressed with the info it contained and the accompanying booklet. it is a great start for book reports and the like! I also liked that they have a 20 question test at the end of the booklet (great for bible study/class!). Sample question:
What chiefly hampered the international research team in its efforts to make sense of the Dead Sea Scrolls?
If I don't have a way to contact you, you will forfeit your win!
Disclosure: This DVD was sent to
me for myself , as a sample, and donated as a gift for one of my
readers. There was no compensation given from IMP for the review.
Question answer: C- the workload was overly estimated! Imagine over 900 documents, some 26 FEET long in 3/4" pieces and you get the idea!

- political infighting
- interference by the Vatican
- sheer volume of the scroll fragments
