Thanks to Doubleday I recently had a great opportunity to read a new take on Brad Stoker's Dracula- you know, the book that STARTED the whole 'vampires are cool' trend leading to the Twilight Series?
Synopsis: "Reader, you are about to enter a world that exists simultaneous with your own. But be warned: in its realm, there are no rules, and there is certainly no neat formula to become—or to destroy—one who has risen above the human condition…The truth is, we must fear monsters less and be warier of our own kind."
London, 1890. Mina Murray, the rosy-cheeked, quintessentially pure Victorian heroine, becomes Count Dracula’s object of desire. To preserve her chastity, five male “defenders” rush in to rescue her from the vampire’s evil clutches. This is the version of the story we've been told. But now, from Mina’s own pen, we discover that the story is vastly different when told from the female point of view.
In this captivating, bold act of storytelling, award-winning author Karen Essex breathes startling new life into the characters of Bram Stoker's Dracula, transporting the reader into the erotic and bizarre underbelly of the original story. While loosely following the events of its classic predecessor, Dracula in Love deviates from the path at every turn.
About the Author: Karen Essex is an award-winning novelist and journalist and a screenwriter. Presently dividing her time between London and Los Angeles, she is researching and writing her next book, a Victorian gothic novel. Karen invites friends and readers to follow along with her in her travels as she chronicles her adventures, joys, and sorrows in putting together a complex work of historical fiction: www.karenessex.com/blog.
Review: I read this book in only 2 days! I was SO taken by it! It starts a little slow, then picks up speed and barrels you along the storyline. You will find yourself having to stop reading when you can't see the page anymore, not because you want to stop! I have always loved vampire tales and Essex's take is right on for bringing new life to the recently over done genre. The female perspective is very interesting as are all the Victoria details. Essex is a stickler for research and it shows 100% in this book. Some reviewers have been put off by some of the erotic scenes in the book, but vampires and eroticism go hand in hand- just see how popular True Blood the TV series is, and you'll know it's true. They are part of the lore and I had no problem with them.
The NY Post has declared Dracula in Love required reading (way to go Karen!), and I can't agree more! The book is such a great time capsule of Victorian life AND provides the alternate side to Stroker's Dracula. The inclusion of Celtic lore makes it even more intriquing. If you loved the Highlander series, you're gonna love this book- it has the same romaticism.
AND Doubleday has been generous to offer my readers TWO copies for giveaway!
