Today is Johnny Appleseed's Birthday!
I always had a kindred connection with ol Johnny, probably because I love Fall SO much and apples even more! Plus in a way, he reminded me of my grandpa, so the fondness for the story just stayed with me! You can check out a cute interactive online reading of the tale for kids at Weekly Reader!
Johnny Appleseed was really John Chapman, who ventured out into the frontier from his home in Massachusetts and landed in Ohio, with his family. Legend has it he planted apple trees in Ohio, Indiana and finally Illinois, wherever he went! The truth is he build nurseries, fenced them, sold shares in them and had caretakers for them! He then returned every year or two to keep them up. Just call him Mr. Entrepeneur!
He had a kindness to all animals and was actually a missionary for the Swedenborgian Church.
So in honor of his birthday, here's a couple of apple recipes for you and the kiddos to make!
Rice crispy treats in the shape of an apple
Mini Apple Crostadas (like an open apple pie!)
Candied Apples ANYONE can eat
and some apple crafts:
Apple print crafts
Apple Garland/ Wreath Idea
And for our trivia take on apples: Do you know where the phrase "The apple of my eye" comes from?
"According to Food: A Dictionary of Literal and Nonliteral Terms, by Robert Palmatier, the Old English word for apple referred to both fruit in general and to the eyeball, which was the “fruit” of the eye. Someone who is the apple of your eye, then, is as cherished as the organ that allows you to see."
ENJOY!
