Synopsis: If you enjoyed Friday Night Lights, this book is a must-read. Remember Why You Playdocuments the lives, struggles, and triumphs of the players and coaches of Faith Christian School in Grapevine, Texas.
Sports columnist and author David Thomas followed the team for a full season, recording a story that will inspire readers to understand that relationships are more important than winning.
One of the key events was a game that Faith Christian played against the Gainesville State Tornadoes, a school for convicted juvenile offenders. The story of this spectacular game is being made into a movie, titled One Heart, with an anticipated release in November 2010. Reminiscent of Hoosiers and Remember the Titans, this true story makes a strong statement about the impact of compassion and sportsmanship.
You can go to the book's website and download the first chapter to preview it!
About the Author: David Thomas is a senior writer and sports columnist for theFort Worth Star–Telegram. His work has been honored nationally by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and he has received the McClatchy Company President's Award for excellence in journalism. A lifelong Texan and graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, he lives near Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Sally, and their two children, Ashlin and Tyson.
Review: Now you know us Southerns LOVE football. it's sorta in our DNA.So any decent book about football is gonna be on our reading lists as well! I had heard about this story and was curious to read the book about the events leading up to the pivotal final game, where Faith Christian embraced the Gainesville State School (a maximum security juvenile correctional facility). When Faith Christian fans realized the Gainesville students had no fans, half switched sides and rooted for Gainesville. What lead up to this is where the coaching and parental instruction showed through.
This book is more than just a book about football- it's a book about heart, and how a Christian act can have far reaching effects, much like a trail of toppled dominos. The book is a quick read and I recommend it for ALL team players in your household or among your family, as it teaches what it truly means to be a team (be it a football team, or god's team). It is a great book for family discussions as well.
