Music Monday (Yes I Know It's Wednesday!): Review and Giveaway: A Winter's Tale by Bobby Long CD Review

**  this giveaway is closed ***

Yeah yeah, I know, it's Wednesday- BUT the criteria was the review couldn't go up til the 23rd, and I wanted to tell you about this great cd ASAP! So It's Music Monday aka Tuesday time!

a winters tale cover
As somebody who GASP, has only seen 20 minutes worth of Twilight (I know, I know), I was totally unfamiliar with Bobby Long, prior to Music Moms contacting me to review his latest cd.  How he escaped my radar, is totally beyond me!

I have freely admitted here I have very eccentric music tastes. I have found as I have gotten older that the music that my maternal grandfather played when I was young- old time country, mountain music, old- time southern folk music, and yes, even Lawrence Welk -has come back to influence what I like now. Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE my rock n roll, but I want music I can APPRECIATE the complexity of.  Frequently classic styled country or Southern folk songs totally meet my criteria. But I am also having a flashback for high school and English singers (hence Duffy and Adele on my playlists), so Long just fit in perfectly.

Here's the track listing, and my impression of every song. Overall, WOW- the complexity and how well the backup band (who had just come together for this album) blend with Long. If you check out the video below you will here the new single, the Bounty of Mary Jane, A Stranger Song, Who Have You Been Loving, and here Long speak about his odd influences as well,  I'd be surprised if you can get his voice out of your head after watching the video! You won't be able to after listening to the whole cd!

Tracklisting:
1. A Winter Tale-the first single
2. Who Have You Been Loving- Bob Dylan,60's version, meets Chris Isaak- I think this is my favorite song on the album! Check out the acoustic version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBdGoj5SScE
3. The Bounty Of Mary Jane- retro southern folk
4. In The Frost- leonard cohen laced with celtic drama
5. Sick Man Blues-james taylor meets modern indie
6. Penance Fire Blues- Duffy meets Bobby
7. A Passing Tale-Richie Havens in a British accent
8. Dead And Done- Morrisey is back, plus any song that mentions Johnny Cash earns 3 stars for that mention alone!
9. Being A Mockingbird- folk mized with old time country swing
10. Two Years Old-brings to mind John Lennon in a weird way
11. A Stranger Song- 60's protest folk sound returns! In a much better modern way!

About: Born in Wigan near Manchester in Northern England, Bobby Long grew up from age four in a small town in Wessex"Thomas Hardy country. The young British singer-songwriter didn’t even start to play guitar until he was 17, At 18, he moved to London to attend university, graduating with a degree in sound and media for film.  He quickly established himself on the local open mic circuit. In London he met a circle of fellow musicians, among them Marcus Foster, with whom he wrote a song called “Let Me Sign,” and soon-to-be megastar Robert Pattinson, who would sing it in the 2008 blockbuster film Twilight. Oh, and he's only 24 now!

So he recorded an acoustic CD, Dirty Pond Songs, in his bedroom, and set off for America in April 2009.   As what became known as the Dangerous Summer Tour continued for months, he sold thousands of copies of Dirty Pond Songs on the road as well as two self-released live CDs.A Winter's Tale is his first studio album. You can follow him on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/musicbobbylong, Twitter: http://twitter.com/bobbylongnews, Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/musicbobbylong and on his webpage: http://www.bobbylong.info/index1.php

I'm in agony as Long isn't coming anywhere close for us to go him in concert- his shows have rave reviews- and he reminds me alot of a young Chris Isaak and his early shows (yeah, I know I just dated myself badly!), and I can't wait to see his show! He seems like a guy who knows what he likes and sticks to it, and I think he'll be in the music business for a very long time!

As a parting gift-here's part of his take on the old Hank Williams song, never You'll Never Take Her Away From Me:
