Guest Post: Arts and Crafts for the Summer

Summer vacation is full of fun outdoor activities but sometimes even the sprinkler and trips to the pool can get a little monotonous. Fight off the boring summer days with these craft ideas. All you need are some easy to find materials, some creativity and kids!

Fence mural: Tape a long roll of heavy, thick paper to a fence. (Butcher paper works well for this activity and can be bought at craft or school supply businesses). Fill several small containers with washable paint and brushes. Decide on a theme (ocean creatures, summer activities, our family, zoo animals) and get busy making a mural with all of your young artists!

Flicker paint: Wet both sides of a piece of white drawing paper with a sponge or damp wash cloth. Make sure the paper doesn’t get so wet because it will rip. Get some watercolor paint on a brush and drip, flick, and shake paint onto the paper. The colors will mix and blend as wet paint is added to the already drying paint. Leave in place to dry.

Nature collage: This activity starts with an exciting nature hunt to collect items from the yard or park that you can put into a small bucket. Leaves, sticks, small rocks, acorns, and flowers all work well. Squeeze trails of glue onto heavy and colorful construction paper. Scatter your outdoor treasures onto the glue to make a summer nature collage.

Brick making: Mix dirt and water in a small bucket to form a mud ball. Press the mud into muffin tins. Bake in the oven at 250 degrees for fifteen minutes. Allow the mud bricks to cool. Turn the muffin pan upside down to get the bricks out. Use your mud bricks to build castles and buildings. You can use them time and time again or use fresh mud to hold the bricks together. Use stones, grass, sticks, and flowers to decorate.

These crafts are from the book Preschool Art, a book that I highly recommend if you have a child who loves to craft and create. Enjoy the summer fun!
