We were recently sent a wonderful pack of a coloring book, dvd and 2 cds from the Mother Goose Club to review with Kiddo. We had not seen the Mother Goose Club before, so it was interesting to see how Kiddo reacted to the set!
The Mother Goose Club is a series of 1-minute educational programs for preschoolers promoting early literacy, shown on PBS. The live-action series features six colorful characters from the Mother Goose world: Teddy Bear, Jack B. Nimble, Little Bo Peep, Baa Baa Sheep, Mary Quite Contrary, and Eep Mouse, who invite viewers to sing and dance along to favorite nursery rhymes.
Early childhood research has shown that familiarity with nursery rhymes helps young children learn to read. When preschoolers read, recite, sing or clap along to rhymes, they develop a feel for the sounds and structures of language, the first step in becoming successful readers. Nursery rhymes are short and rhythmic, which makes them easy for children to learn and memorize. As children hear, sing or read nursery rhymes, they develop “phonemic awareness” or the ability to detect the individual sounds that make up words, a crucial first step in learning to read.
Nursery rhymes, especially Mother Goose rhymes, also introduce children to new vocabulary which increases comprehension and benefits learning in all subjects. Children who can recognize rhyming words, cat and hat for example, learn to read quicker and more successfully than their peers. This relationship holds true regardless of a child’s socio-economic background or the education level of the parents.
Kiddo fell in love with the DVD we were sent and had to watch it multiple times in a row on the first day! We have always sang nursery rhymes to, and then with Kiddo, so she delights in them. She was delighted to learn a new one (Rig-a-Jig-Jig) and delighted in singing the ones she did know, very loudly!
The same held true for the set of 2 cds! Each cd contains 30 songs of traditional nursery rhyme favorites, like Baa Baa Black Sheep, Three Blind Mice, Farmer in the Dell, and Little Jack Horner, along with some you might have forgotten like Doctor Foster, Going to St. Ives, Little Tommy Tucker and Goosey Goosey Gander! Kiddo had alot of fun singing along with both cds and they are in repeat play alot in the cars!
We both loved the Mother Goose Club Coloring Book-each page has a nursery rhyme, along with a matching image to color (like Jack jumping over a candlestick, 2 shoes to buckle, Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall). It is great to follow up the dvd with! Kiddo had fun finding all the nursery rhymes in the book from the dvd!
The Mother Goose Club website contains a collection of songs, videos, printables and rhymes by topic! The site offers activities and tips on using the rhymes to promote literacy at home, and at school. So it's great for parents AND teachers alike! You can also check out their videos on their YouTube channel!
