I think this new book (released last month) is one of my favorite books I've reviewed this year! Not only is is SOUTHERN, but my friends and I recognize so much in our lives, and those of our parents, in the book!
Synopsis: On the coast of Alabama, there is a house cloaked in mystery, a place that reveals the truth and changes lives... Ellie Calvin's marriage is dying and with her beloved daughter away at college, and a growing gap between her and her husband, she doesn't quite seem to fit into her own life. Everything changes after her mother passes away and Ellie both discovers her mother's hidden diary, and sees her ex-boyfriend, Hutch, at her mother's funeral.
As she and Hutch delve into her mother's decades-old unrequited-love story, they just might uncover the secrets in their own hearts. "Coming Up for Air was inspired by a real-life event on the Gulf Coast: a Jubilee," says Patti. "I have always been fascinated by the unseen, the mysterious and unexplained. And a Jubilee is just that - a mystery. In the Mobile Bay, a confluence of tide, weather and wind combine to cause the fish, shrimp, crab and sea life to rise to the surface for the taking: a sacrifice of the sea. "
"What is it, I asked myself, that makes this sea life "come up for air" at the risk of dying? Are there times when our own life is worth the risk?" she says. In Coming Up for Air, Ellie Calvin is drowning in a disintegrating marriage. On the Alabama coast, in a house rumored to change a life, Ellie embarks on a journey through her mother's past and her own present to decide her future. The reader travels through the 1960s Civil Rights movement, present day marriage expectations and the allure of past love.

About the Author: After earning her Master’s degree in Child Health, Patti worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist until her first child was born. After listening to her inner voice that urged her to write a book finally, she gave it a try. Loosing the Moon was the popular result! This her eighth book! She is a frequent speaker at luncheons, book clubs and women’s groups where she discusses the importance of storytelling and anything else they want to talk about (she's Southern, we like to talk...) Patti is a full time writer, wife and mother living with her husband and three children in Mountain Brook, AL where she is working on her next novel.
Review: Love, love, love this book! Most Southerners will recognize friends and family, in both the current and past sections of the book. Patti has found the unique voices of the South and compiled them all into one book! But more importantly, reading this book was like talking to your Great Aunt and having her wisdom imparted onto you! I kept finding myself nodding, and remembering similar sentiments and thoughts told to me by different family members over the years.
The main topic that binds the book is finding TRUTH. Be it about ourselves, our pasts, our families, our marriages, our lives. We live broken lives, disavowing the truth, allowing Grace to get us through the lives that didn't run out as we hoped/wished for. But when you find the truth, acknowledge it, and act upon it, you will find a heavy burden lifted from you. Letting go is HARD, "doing the awful thing is sometimes the only thing we can do to save our souls". BUT it makes you stronger than you will ever realize. I think it is a hard truth that we will all want to make sure our children learn NOW while they are kids, so as adults they can make great choices!
You won't be able to get through this book without stopping to ponder and breathe, and saying "____ REALLY needs to read this book!". It will stay with you for days after you read it and hopefully it will help those who need the gentle urging to find their own truth and life path! Kudos to Patti for bringing back the Southern tradition of morals and guidance wrapped in a tale that everyone can understand!
Put this book on YOUR Christmas list and give it to everybody! They'll love you and you'll be talking about this book for months!
And now one lucky reader will get to win their own copy of the wonderful novel!
