the confession coverSynopsis:  Published in 2010, The Confession is legal thriller about the wrongful conviction of football player Donté Drumm in the abduction, rape and murder of a cheerleader, and the longtime silence of the murderer, Travis Boyette. About nine years after the conviction, and just a few days before Drumm's execution, Boyette decides to confess. He has an inoperable brain tumor and nothing to lose. The issue becomes: How can he convince everyone they're about to execute the wrong person?

THE CONFESSION has won the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction
About the Author: Realizing he didn’t have the right stuff for a pro career, he shifted gears and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University. After graduating from law school at Ole Miss in 1981, he went on to practice law for nearly a decade in Southaven, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. In 1983, he was elected to the state House of Representatives and served until 1990.

One day at the DeSoto County courthouse, Grisham overheard the harrowing testimony of a twelve-year-old rape victim and was inspired to start a novel exploring what would have happened if the girl’s father had murdered her assailants. Getting up at 5 a.m. every day to get in several hours of writing time before heading off to work, Grisham spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in 1987. His hobby soon turned into a new full-time career—and sparked one of publishing’s greatest success stories.  After selling rights to different books for films, he became a huge success!

In 1996 he returned to the courtroom, to finish a case he had promised to keep fighting- no surprise, he won the case for his client! He has continued to write one novel a year. Grisham lives with his wife Renee and their two children Ty and Shea. The family splits their time between their Victorian home on a farm in Mississippi and a plantation near Charlottesville, VA.

Review: "It's hard to say what hasn't already been said about Grisham as a writer! He is a legend story teller. His books bring to mind lazy Sundays in the South, curling up on your Grandma's porch, and listening to the adults discuss a decades old murder, and their theories. You will be entranced and not want to leave til the story is done, as you will be doing with this book!

This is a fairly fast paced book and a quick read (Mom reads just as fast as I do, FYI). It is a good page turner, as you hope that the lawyers, judges, police officers, governor, who all knew a confession had been wrought in error, and that Drumm, is innocent. The story of the Lutheran minister and attorney who must step up and bring to light the truth, is what keeps you reading long into the night! Some might say the story is a little formulatic, but really, this is what we want from Grisham- we know we will get a tight, well spun tale, that will keep us guessing, and the innocent will win in the end. Isn't that always the best story we could read? Looking forward to The Litigator!"

And now one lucky reader can win this review copy!

  13. I'm a big fan of John Grisham's writing style, and The Confession was the first e-book I purchased for my new Kindle. Like his previous novels, The Confession is a smooth read; I finished it in just over a day. Grisham has a knack for interspersing engaging dialogue and narrative, and he knows how to end a chapter leaving you with a desire to read the next.
