SynopsisAs a wildlife rehabilitator in southeast Louisiana, Pamela Wells has dealt with her fair share of wild animals, but her reclusive life is forever changed when she meets an elusive former soldier named Daniel Phillips. Sent to Pamela’s wildlife sanctuary as part of his parole requirements, Daniel and Pamela quickly clash until Daniel’s troubled past unexpectedly comes to light. After serving in Iraq, Daniel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Pamela tries to help ease his condition by introducing him to the healing power of animals. Daniel begins to find peace, and an unexpected kindred spirit in Pamela. Fearing one day she will be forced to give up her beloved sanctuary, Pamela confides in Daniel about her debilitating health. United by their misfortunes, the relationship turns romantic.

Just when Pamela has found someone to love and share her burdens, Daniel skips town, crushing her heart. Suddenly Pamela finds herself alone and in a desperate situation. She has no choice but to turn to a ruthless Louisiana attorney, Bob Patrick, for help. Bob promises Pamela financial security in exchange for a life as his obedient wife. When Daniel unexpectedly returns, Bob is not willing to give Pamela up. Like an ensnared bird, Pamela struggles to free herself of her cruel capture. The fight may prove deadly, but Daniel is willing to do anything to save her. Can two broken souls eventually find happiness or, like the broken wings of a dove, will they be forever kept from reaching the heights of heaven.

Review: Sometime you just 'click' with an author. You read a couple of their books and you just KNOW you would get along, as the way they write is like the 'voice in your head' that wishes it could write! That's Alex to me- she writes of the locales I know, and love, she knows the nuances of New Orleans (good and bad), and the peace of the Northshore.
I can count on a wonderful 2 hour read that takes me not into an unknown world, but a very familiar one!

I love how her novels intertwine and leave the reader with a feeling of inside knowledge, of characters' back stories (having read her other books), yet can stand alone to new readers. Knowing that Alex had ended the Niki Beavoir series, I was pleased to find Val and Lance in this book- as they are 2 of my favorite characters of hers! In fact, I hope that Pamela and Daniel will come back again, even if only on the sidelines, of future Dallas August books!

Alex does a great job of keeping the theme of broken wing/recovery running through the book in many different ways. I have to congratulate her on dealing accurately, honestly and sensitively with the topic of returning military veterans with PTSD. She interwove it into the romance in a natural way, and in a way that many people will be able to relate to and appreciate. She also deals wonderfully with the diagnosis of lupus, making this rarely understood disease more approachable. She also provides SO much info on animal rehab, that you could almost teach a home-schooling lesson from the book!

But having said all that, this at it's foremost a wonderful romantic novel, that made me laugh out loud so many times ('flea infested furballs' will forever more equate to squirrels I think), and smile at all the NOLA asides and mentions. If you want to know about NOLA and it's surrounding area, then this book continues Alex's wonderful description of them!  Pick this one up and you won't be disappointed!
