Book Review: Tolkien's World by Gareth Hanrahan, Illus by Peter Mckinstry

Tolkien has always been dear to me- having read his stories growing up and getting lost in his imaginative tales, it wasn't until I got older and realized just how much DEPTH and layers there were to his tales told to amuse his son! The movie franchise has almost made us forget the written word of Tolkien however. I am glad to see this book however, as it offers a superb way to read the original books, yet have this 'guide' to illustrate the tales, making for a fuller experience.

Review: WOW is the first word that comes to mind! This book truly fits the word 'scrumptious'! It is lavish, stunning and complete! There are pen and ink drawings, like the one above, or full color paintings and drawings. Visually, the book grabs you and keeps you flipping pages! If you have a Hobbit fan, or one in the making, with the release of the new movie, you need to buy them THIS book!

There have been many guides to Middle Earth and Tolkien's tales over the years, but this is one that you will not mind leaving on the coffee table year round! If you are familiar with the movies, you will see illustrations that are similar, if you have only read the books, the illustrations will ring true to their vivid literal descriptions. The book starts with an introduction, then discusses the Free Peoples, then The Enemy, and then legends and Lore of Middle Earth.

In fact, I highly recommend reading through this book, before seeing the new movie, to reaquaint yourself with the tale! The book is very thorough and sure to delight any Tolkien fan on your Christmas list this year! So be sure to put it on the top pf your list!
