Synopsis: Working with seasoned detective Milton Gurkey—a. k. a. Pickles—didn’t exactly start off as a solid partnership. Disgruntled at being stuck with a rookie, Pickles felt it was his duty to give Beaumont a hard time. But, when Pickles is suspected of murder, there’s only one person who can help him.

One day, a stop at the Doghouse restaurant quickly turns deadly. Not feeling well, Pickles steps out into the parking lot for a breath of fresh air and stumbles into a crime in progress In the same instant, he is felled by a sudden heart attack. Eventually, he’s found unconscious, with a dead woman on the ground nearby, and the murder weapon in his hand. With Pickles under an Internal Affairs investigation, it's up to the new kid on the block, his partner, and friends on the force to uncover the truth.

Interview with the Author:

Why did you decide to step into the e-novella foray, versus writing the novella into a regular Beaumont book?

Because Second Watch allows new readers and old ones to meet J. P. Beaumont at the beginning of his career, my editor suggested that a novella featuring a younger version might help introduce him to new readers.  There's a bit of literary time travel involved because some of the action in Ring in the Dead takes place AFTER some of the action in Second Watch, Beaumont # 21, which won't be out until September 10th.

Will there be more e-novellas featuring Beaumont?

I'm not sure if there will be more novellas.  It was a fun project but it involves a whole different kind of pacing than that required for writing a book.

Are there any projects we can look forward to in the future from you?"

My next Ali Reynolds book, Moving Target, is due out from Simon and Schuster early next year, and I'm at work on the next Joanna Brady book for HarperCollins.  That one is due out next summer or early fall.

Review: The J.P. Beaumont series continues with forthcoming novel SECOND WATCH (on-sale September 10th). In anticipation for the September release, RING IN THE DEAD includes a treat: the prologue and first two chapters of SECOND WATCH!

This is a fun read- quick and easy, and for fans of the Beaumont series, a must read! Jance is a pretty prolific and busy writer and I commend her for branching out and trying the novella! It's like giving your readers a surprise treat! This novella gives the reader some more background on Beaumont and a teaser for the new book, making for an enticing lure! If you love Beaumont, check it out!
