Now that the shopping, wrapping, and other hustle-bustle of the holiday season, is winding down, you may find yourself too worn down to find the time to come up with some great party food ideas for New Year's! Whether you are entertaining at home or visiting family or friends, it makes sense to keep your hors d’oeuvres and appetizers simple, yet festive and colorful.

Kontos Foods, provider of flatbreads and other Mediterranean foods, suggests using Cocktail Flatbreads, two-inch mini pita disks, as the basis for a variety of creative party foods, instead of traditional crackers! The mini-flatbreads even have with cafĂ©-style grill marks on them!

You can use the Cocktail Flatbreads to assemble delicious appetizers with sliced meats, chicken salad, seafood salad or sliced fish. You can also create mouth-watering hamburger sliders, pizza samplers, or serve with bruschetta or dips (like the photo below).

Demetrios Haralambatos, executive chef at Kontos Foods, offers these simple recipes to get you started.

Step 1: Warm It Up

Warm the Cocktail Flatbreads for 5 minutes at 375⁰ F degrees.

Step 2: Top It Up

Smoked Salmon.  Layer small pieces of your favorite salmon on the Kontos Cocktail Flatbread. Top the salmon with sliced avocado, horseradish mayonnaise and/or picked ginger.

Grilled Beef or Pork Tenderloin.  Place sliced strips of grilled beef or roasted pork tenderloin on the Cocktail Flatbread. Drizzle with gravy, steak sauce or horseradish mayonnaise. For the beef, try topping with slivered Asiago cheese. Garnish with dill or scallions.

Chicken or Tuna Salad.  Dollop a teaspoonful of chicken or tuna on the Cocktail Flatbread. Garnish with sliced cherry tomato, scallion and fresh basil for a green-and-red Christmas-style treat.

Seafood Salad. Dollop a teaspoonful of seafood salad on the Cocktail Flatbread. Garnish with sprigs of fresh basil.

Hamburger Slider.  Grill a small hamburger, or cheeseburger, and place between two Cocktail Flatbreads. Garnish with ketchup, mustard or relish.

Pizza Samplers.  Spread a teaspoonful of pizza sauce on each Cocktail Flatbread. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and bake in oven or toaster oven for 5-7 minutes at 375 degrees (no need to warm bread beforehand). Note: Add pepperoni, sausage pieces, mushrooms, etc. to take your mini pizzas to the next level!

Preparation tips

- To save time, purchase your toppings, such as smoked salmon, ready-made chicken or tuna salad at your supermarket. Voila – ready in minutes.

- If you are unable to find 2-inch mini pita disks, you can make your own by buying regular-sized Kontos Flatbread and cutting out juice-glass sized circles using a glass or cookie-cutter.

“The important thing to remember when producing appetizers using Cocktail Flatbreads is to be creative and use your absolute favorite ingredients and toppings. There are no rules – just assemble and enjoy!” said Steve Kontos, vice president and owner of Kontos Foods.

  1. I have never seen these before. These would make a unique alternative to crackers.
