Quick- think of the one item in your purse that would cause you the most heartache and AGGRAVATION if you lost it.
Bet you had to pause did you?
Wallet or cell phone? Tick tock, tick tock.
With most of us using smart phones nowawdays as more than just a phone, it's hard to decide if your wallet or or phone has more of per personal, private and financial records and history, isn't it?
Personally I don't even write in my purse calendar anymore. If it's not in my phone, it doesn't exist/not going to happen! Passwords? Nope, not in the wallet on scraps of paper anymore. Now I can store them in my email account, which I can access via the phone, or an app on my phone. Photos of the kid? Nope- they're on my phone now. In fact, when we were on vacation, I took just as many photos on my smart phone, as I did on the expensive DSLR camera. In fact, I frequently DON"T take the big camera anymore. It's heavy and cumbersome, but the cell phone? Why I already am carrying it, and it slides into a pocket....
And it's not just your wallet is it? Need a magnifying glass? There's an app for that on my phone! Watch? Not many people wear one anymore- not when it's right there in large print on your cell phone. Note pad? Yup, there's an app for that too.
In fact, there is SO much that can be done on your phone, that you almost just need your driver's license, debit card, and phone to leave the house!
So when suddenly it's not there, we all do the same thing: PANIC.
We look around, check purses, bags, tables. Shoot I once went thru the dishwasher, thinking it fell out there! Though I have to admit that once I spent 2 HOURS looking for my phone and could NOT find it. Panic was not the word. Border line hysteria? Getting there! I had 2 school events, a zoo trip and festival photos that had NOT been downloaded to my computer on the phone. Oh yeah, I was freaked. So much so that I yelled at the cat to tell me where the phone was! I knew I had walked in the house with the phone-as I had been talking on it, so I figured why not ask the cat?
Now here is the Twilight Zone ending to THAT panic episode. I picked up the house phone and walked to check the laundry in the washer, as I was calling to report my phone lost, and there on top of the pile of clean laundry by the dryer (that I had already checked TWICE in my frantic search), was the phone. I hung up the house phone and turned around and there sat the cat in the doorway to the laundry room, looking like the Cheshire Cat. Did she put it there? Was it there the whole time, even though I had not been in their since before the phone went 'missing'? We put our money on the cat being klepto again. But at least I could breathe a big sign of relief and calm down!
Course that tale is also a warning about backing up your data, which I will talk about in a later post! But even with all that panic, the one assurance I had was that I DID have insurance on the phone and would not have to pay $400 to replace it! WHEW! In fact, 1 in 4 people will lose, damage, or have their phone stolen this year alone. For something we keep glued to the proverbial hip, we can be klutzy (quick, how many have dropped a phone in a toliet? See, there ya go!).

ReplyDeleteI have never texted and rarely use my cell. I have never lost it nor have I lost my wallet (thankfully).
ReplyDeleteOnce, though, when my youngest was 2 or 3, we couldn't find him at our home. We called for him and looked everywhere for him. We were panicked...and then we found him, hiding behind a large toy in his room. He was safe all along and it was such a sweet relief to find him!! :)

dropped it straight into my glass of water!
ReplyDeleteI voted for the kiddie's very cute and colorful art work. I left my phone in my pocket and it caused me to do a search any and everywhere. I finally, as a last ditch effort checked my dirty clothes basket and ta-da..there the phone was! It made me mad with myself as it delayed my grocery shopping..etc.. but then I was so happy that it was found.

The only horror story is that I hardly use my cell phone and when I go to use it when I'm out, the battery is dead. I recharge it then put it back in my purse and forget that it's there again.

I actually had my cell phone stolen before when I was working. Someone broke into my locker at work and took my purse. I tried calling my number and some woman answered it and I asked her why she had my phone and started cursing me out saying it was hers. I told her I called the police and they were tracking the number and she said that she was going to throw it out. I never did find my phone.
