Welcome to our spot on the book blog tour for Mortal Fire!
Synopsis: Twenty-nine-year-old, independent, and self-assured Cambridge history professor Emma D'Eresby has one obsession in life: the curious journal of a seventeenth-century Englishman, a portion of which was left to her by her late grandfather.
When an unexpected opportunity to study the journal in its entirety presents itself, Emma finds herself leaving Cambridge to take up a year-long position at a prestigious university in Maine. Anticipating a quiet year of research, Emma quickly finds her work impeded by a range of unforeseen complications. From the start, there is the well-intentioned matchmaking of her vivacious, Russian colleague, Elena Smalova, and the unexpected jailing of one of her post-graduate students. More troublesome, however, are the unsolved, brutal night attacks on women near the university and Emma's suspicion that they might be linked to the sinister English professor, Kort Staahl. But, most diverting and disconcerting of all, is Emma's growing attraction to the strikingly handsome Dr. Matthew Lyons, whose kind but deliberately distant demeanor puzzles her.
Suspense and dread mount when Kort begins to take a persistent and unsettling interest in Emma. What are Kort's intentions, and what is he capable of? And the mystery surrounding Matthew only deepens when Emma discovers a link between him and the journal. What is Matthew trying to hide?

Review: First the bad news (ok, maybe good news, depends on if you're a glass half full/empty person)- this is the first book of a planned TRIOLOGY. Ok, you can sigh now, as you know what that means- not all the answers to the questions posed in the synopsis will be answered!
Secondly, this is a BIG book at almost 400 pages, yet I read it in 2 nights- so yes, you are gonna scream right on through it, and then have that quintessential reading moment of "Nooooo, it can't be over"....luckily the author gives a long intro preview into the next book, so you have an inkling where the next one will start (again good/bad news).
Thirdly, the author crafts a mean story- her characters will lure you in and spellbound you. If you get caught up in series, this one will hook you by the second chapter! Every time you think you know where the story is going, the author put's it on its head and spins you off in another direction.
Fourthly, even those the book has Christian overtones and theme, it is not slap you in the face. In fact, it is so deftly crafted into the story, that it is totally appropriate and realistic.
Fifth, if you're a lover of supernatural books, the book will drive you MAD (to quote the British), as you try to figure out the link between the journal and the main characters. When you think you have it, the author applies a twist, and you're back trying to decipher the clues, and wondering if this is something NEW. AHA, now I have your interest!
This was a really interesting, is exasperating at the end!, read, and I'm sure Tolkien and C.S. Lewis would applaud the author's weaving of her tale! I will be anxiously awaiting the 2nd book! Check it out- it's perfect for a Fall read!
