Book Review and Giveaway- No Mad/Love Monkey

** this contest is closed **

Is there really a male version of 'chick lit'- yes there is and I recently got to read not 1 but 2 different books from it!

Lad Lit (is what it is called,I wish somebody had a better title) IS different from chick lit- it's not as 'fluffy' as chick lit- there seems to be more serious issues at play. AND, because they're written by men, they're cruder (yes Virginia that means more explicit in body/sexual activities). But you know they're being written by men, so you should NOT be surprised, I mean come on, work around men and you will see it's just how their BRAINS work...

I am putting these books together for a giveaway as to me they 'blend'- the first is a younger protagonist, and the second book is an older man facing new changes in his life. But to me it seemed like if the main character from the first book made certain choices he would end up as the main character in the second book. So, they seem like a set to me, so waala- a blended giveaway!

love monkey coverLove Monkey by Kyle Smith (please note this is a RECYCLED book-aka it has been read ONCE by me, but is in great shape!)

I have read Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and Rob Sheffield's Love is a Mixed Tape (Life, loss and What I listened To), so I thought I had an idea what this book would be like. The main character, Tom Farrell, is unmarried at age 32 and is swimming through the dating waters while working at a New York newspaper.

I loved Smith's narratives about the newspaper business- they were realistic and full of life. Farrell's undying devotion to friend/quasi girlfriend Julia has you wanting to jump to the end to see if they end up together. The inclusion of September 11, 2001 events, along with their effects, on the main characters was interesting.

This book is another interesting take on the male mind. I think it is an excellent pre-cursor to No Mad.

no mad coverNo Mad by Sam Moffie- brand new book!

Post-40 Aaron Abrams is a High School teacher during the school year and a book writer in his off time. He gets a huge advance on a new book, rushed home and finds his wife with his brother, starting off a chain-reaction of events.

After leaving his wife (taking his faithful golden retriever with him), Abrams begins a journey of discovery while crossing the country doing research for his new book based on catching up with the popular people from college. The journey is punctuated by Abrams classic rock lyrics of songs that come to him during, before and after events. I felt the sex segments were a little overdone, but that's from a female perspective. If you stay with the book, there are a lot of social truths in Abrams meetings with his ex-fellow students (society dropout aka hippie, politician, Gettsyburg tour guide, Crazy Horse dynamite carver, etc).

I hope you enjoy the book as I did-it's a valuable take on men and family!
