Book Review: The Lace Makers of Glemnara

If you have ever thought of moving to Ireland, The Lace Makers
Of Glenmara
by Heather Barberi will make you want to move
there even more! The author's vivid characters and descriptions
of the Irish countryside will make you wish you were there,
with the protagonist Kate Robinson, exploring!

The Lace Makers tells the story of Kate as she seeks to get away from her life at home in Seattle and seeks hwat to do with it, while going on the vacation of a lifetime. She doesn't realize her future will find her there in the lush coast of Ireland. Kate's roaming headlessly into the Irish land of her forefathers echoes her feelings of lostness in her own life, and leave room for new opportunities along the way.

When Kate comes upon a village market festival she doesn't know that her destiny is going to meet her there, it is just where she has landed after being given a ride. Soon enough, she is settling in and becoming a keen observer of the issues among the Lace Makers guild of Glenmara, that can be seen in any city or among any set of friends, no matter where they live.

Kate's arrival among their midst stirs up some animosity, but mostly breathes life into the circle of friends. Just as Kate needs something to look toward in her life, she becomes the thing that her new friends need in theirs to spur them to "rediscover" themselves. As they all rediscover things they had missed within themselves, they become stronger and their ties to each other unbreakable. Through Kate they find their futures, as she finds hers through their intervention.

Ultimately, The Lace Makers is a tale of self-loving. After coming back to what it is she does, and loves (sewing), Kate discovers in herself a strength she didn't realize she had. As she accepts this and moves forward, her destiny comes to her and she can make the changes in her life that lead to personal happiness forever!

The Lace Makers is a great 'end of Summer' novel-it's a quick read, full of interesting characters that make you wish for a follow up sequel!
