Book Review : An illustrated Guide to Mythical Creatures by Anita Ganeri & David West

I recently received An illustrated Guide to Muythical Creatures  from Hammond's Langenscheidt Publishing Group  for review.

The book takes readers on a fantastic journey into a mythical world,  enhanced by the magic of 3-D computer generated art—the kind used by Hollywood’s top special-effects experts—by noted British illustrator David West.

West creates a visually stunning universe, much like what audiences will see in the upcoming movies Where the Wild Things Are and New Moon.  Some of the pictures very much seem computer generated, and others are stunning in appearance (such as the chimeras).

The text by Ganeri is wonderful and very interesting. Selections include Dragons, Flying Creatures, Half Human-Half Beast, Water Beasts, Giants, Chimeras, Shape-Shifters, and Ghouls. A glossary explains some of the terms as well.  The Chimeras and Half Human sections include info that I wasn't even aware of (What is a the animal that has  the head of a fox, a greyhound's chest, a lion's body, back legs and tail of a wolf and eagle's claws on its front legs called?  Answer: an Enfield)  !

The book will appeal to both boys and girls. The publisher says the book is aimed at ages 9-12, but I would say it is suitable for ALL ages and would be a great reference book for kids and adults. I know I will be keeping my copy in our historical reference section at home !

This would be a great Christmas gift for kids that have a thirst for unique knowledge, and for adults who love mythical creatures!
