Giveaway/CLOSED/Review: The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

In honor of Halloween, here's a little book review and contest for MOM- a historical novel involving the Salem Witch Trials!

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is a spellbinding, beautifully written novel that moves between contemporary times and one of the most fascinating and disturbing periods in American history–the Salem witch trials.

Harvard graduate student Connie Goodwin needs to spend her summer doing research for her doctoral dissertation. But when her mother asks her to handle the sale of Connie’s grandmother’s abandoned home near Salem, she can’t refuse. As she is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the family house, Connie discovers an ancient key within a seventeenth-century Bible. The key contains a yellowing fragment of parchment with a name written upon it: Deliverance Dane. This discovery launches Connie on a quest--to find out who this woman was and to unearth a rare artifact of singular power: a physick book, its pages a secret repository for lost knowledge.

As the pieces of Deliverance’s harrowing story begin to fall into place, Connie is haunted by visions of the long-ago witch trials, and she begins to fear that she is more tied to Salem’s dark past then she could have ever imagined.

The books does a great job of explaining historical oddities and superstitions, that set up the "witch" trials in the first place. It also explains different theories about what happened. But this IS a piece of fiction and Howe's supposition is her theory, but based on facts. I really liked how the book went back and forth between both time periods. And like a good horror movie, there were times when you found yourself wanting to yell out to Connie "don't go in there , don't do it". Which makes it the perfect Halloween ADULT book giveaway!

Caveat: I do have to say that the book involved witchcraft (obviously) and 'new ageisms', so if you are uncomfortable with that, please pass this book up! I have always gone with the 'to each their own' theory, so I can read it as a work of fiction and it doesn't bother me, but it might be too much for those who are morally opposed to those topics (witchcraft/new ageisms).

Disclosure: I bought this book MYSELF to read, and then decided to give it away to one you my lucky readers!
