Book Review: ONE HUNDRED BUTTERFLIES By Harold Feinstein and Fred Gagnon

Through The Product Review Place and Little Brown & Company, I was recently sent this ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS book to review.

"The butterfly counts not months, but moments and has enough time..."(Rabindranath Tagore)

Isn't that a lovely thought? That we live for the moment and ENJOY it fully?

When you open One Hundred Butterflies you will find time standing still as you turn a page and wonder in awe, and spend time wondering at the details that are shown in EVERY picture that are just mind-blowing! There is no quickly turning thtough this book- you have to savor each and every picture. the vibrancies of colors and the intricacies of the designs are better than any painting.

The book showcases butterfly varieties from around the world, turning exquisite details into mesmerizing works of art. Feinstein's truly breathtaking photographs capture the infinite variety of patterns that occur on the wings of these ornate insects. One hundred impeccably reproduced, oversized photographs allow viewers to appreciate the Blue Morpho of Central America, the African Birdwing, and the Asian Swallowtail, at a scale and depth impossible to experience in nature, with a naked eye.

This is a 10x14 coffee table book in every aspect- it is meant to be shown as a work of art, as that is what it truly is. The book is also a wonderful reference guide, as each page lists the common and Latin names of the butterflies (and moths) and where they can be found. It would be a superb teacher's reference or great for show and tell in class! The book also has some great butterfly quotes sprinkled through out the book (like the one above).

Giving this book as a present is like giving a work of art, it will always be appreciated!

I have to agree with  W. Eugene Smith, who used to work with Feinstein: "(he) is one of the few photographers I have known....(who has) the ability to reveal the familiar to me, as beautifully new, in a strong and honest way".
