Don't you love it when you come home from a trip and there's new music waiting for your ears?
I'm not sure if it's better than getting a new book (Since I started this blog, the euphora over new books arriving in mail has dimmed due to the frequency of gettin review books- NOT that I'm complaining, no sireee-just a point made is all)....
Anyhoo, I came home to find Silvia Fleming had sent me her Love for Christmas cd to review (yes Silvia, the infamous USPS had struck again and it took awhile to get to me)!
The cd was actually released in 2008, but Silvia, as an independent artist, has found it "difficult to get noticed, get discovered. You just keep trying to plug your music". She thought I would like her cd and could help her spread the word! Boy was she RIGHT!
Silvia studied classical piano and received her B.A. in Music Education from California State University, Fullerton (GO CAL). Her favorite music
genres include Big Band tunes, the great American standards, and jazz.
(And it shows on her cd!)
Let me try to put the cd down to one sentence.
Karen Carpenter's voice did a Little Mermaid trick and after she died, took a waltz back in time thru the 40's, then came back and wound up in Silvia.
ABSOLUTELY no lie! I grew up with the two Carpenter cds (Christmas Portrait and Christmas Collection) and at the onset of the FIRST song on Silvia's album I had goosebumps- I KNEW this voice! I was stunned, then awed and the different inflections of maturity and Christanity that give Silvia's cd a depth not on the Carpenter's cds.
Yeah, Color me Floored!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually was sitting going thru my email listening to the cd and hit auto play so it would keep repeating. I lost track at 6 times. YES, this is HOW much I adore this cd!!!!!
I don't think I can pick out a favorite song. Truly the songs are just SO unique, yet so familiar, that it's like hearing a home movie from your childhood. You find yourself nodding and singing along, even if you don't KNOW the words! I could NOT help but to start singing along. TRUST me, this is the mark of an excellent cd-there is no hesitation, you just want to jump in and sing along on EVERY song...............oh Silvia, why did you not make a 2-3 cd package????????????? I am SOOOOOO hooked on her songs!
I honestly did not think ANY cd could come along and move Vanessa Williams Star Bright cd from the number one spot on my cd player after November 1st. Yet Silvia did, I held off on Vanessa's!
OH MY!!!!!!!! Vanessa's cd has been there SINCE it came out! WOW..............but they both have that 40s/classic feel that just SAYS Christmas Holidays to me. I think it was watching too many old old old Christmas movies as a child!
So I'm just gonna give you the track listing with some comments, and let you go check out Silivia's website and take a listen for yourself, then come back here and enter to win your OWN copy, courtesy of Silvia! isn't that a SUPER way to start off our sharing Christmas Music together?
Tracks (click here to listen to the tunes)
1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Karen is here and says HELLO)
2. Christmas Time is Here (featuring Sam Levine on alto sax) (I love a good sax riff on a jazz number, maybe it's because when hubby and I first met he was playing sax? Great arrangement!)
3. Love for Christmas (if you can keep a dry eye without remembering your first Christmas with your spouse, GOOD luck!)
4. Santa Baby (featuring Jeff Cox on bass) (rivals Vanessa's version in jazz feel!)
5. The Other Side of Christmas (Christian but oh so- remember the reason for Christmas without being preachy)
6. In a Lowly Manger Sleeping (great arrangement to copy for church program)
7. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (I've always loved this song for the simplicity of the message and the nostalgia it brings me)
8. More Than a Child (ooooo, an instrumental version of this would be PERFECT for a Christmas wedding! )
9. My Grown Up Christmas List (oh Karen we miss you, but now we have Silvia! SIGH)
10. The Joy of Christmas (featuring Paul Brannon on guitar) (makes you wish for a warm fire to cuddle up with your loved ones with)
11. What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? (featuring Sam Levine on alto sax) (oh my- made me want to get up and call hubby at work, right now!)
