If you haven't read the article on Yahoo/AP yet, it appears that even Google can be 'scammed' into putting false scam site up on the top of its searches and luring people into fraudulent sites.
Obviously this is bad as people will unknowningly give their personal info to the wrong site. But it also brings to question the concept of Page Rank which Google pretty much controls. As most Bloggers know, page rank can me the difference in getting small items for review, or getting paid trips/expensive items to review. So, if it can be proven that search engines can be tricked, how accurate REALLY is the page rank level they give you?????

The good thing about the article is that it shows that if you are new to a website, you should check it out BEFORE giving any info- you can look up the domain at http://www.whois.com, which details when a site was registered and by whom. That can be helpful if the Web address of a phony site is similar to the real one, and let you know if it is really the bank/credit card company that is running the site!.
