Craft Corner: Recycling a dress into a shirt for an older child

You know when you have a favorite baby dress of your child's and you just REALLY want to stretch it, but it's stained, or just way too small this year?

I had that problem! I had this adorable St Patty's Carters ADORABLE 3 leaf Clover 18m dress, that I actualy found for $2 at a discount store as it had a stain on the shoulder/sleeve area. I looked it over and thought using the material for appliques would be worth the $2 if nothing else and brought it home.

Tried stain removal to no avail, so off to Plan b- cutting it up. AND then inspiration struck as I was doing so!
Here's the pix of t cut (I forgot to take a pix of it before cutting, sorry!)
.
oops my bad- forgot to take pix before I started hacking away at it, but you get the idea!

I was originally thinking to make it a tunic styles top to go with a cute St Patty's skirt that still fit my daughter from last year, but once I got looked at it again, I got another idea!.

So off we went to the store and found a plain white t-shirt and some cute matching green buttons to the dress.

Sewing Synopsis:
  1. I attached the bottom of the dress to approximate 2 inches up from the belly button area on the shirt I gathered it some, and then in the back had to do a cross over, due to wear the snaps from the original dress snaps had been.
  2. I then took the trim from the neck of the original dress and sewed it along the FRONT neckline of the new dress.
  3. I then took the matching trim from the sleeves of the original dress and used them to make a 3 leaf clover on the top of the new dress.
  4. I hemmed the bottom of the new dress and then cut off 2 inches of the tshirt that was under the new attached skirt part of the dress.
  5. I then sewed rick rack all the way around covering the seam of the tshirt and dress. Admittedly I was in a hurry, otherwise I would have ran back to the store and got matching green thread and I may go back and redo that. I also sewed a button on the back to cover the joining of the rickrack.
  6. Darling daughter then insisted on 2 buttons on the pockets of the dress and 1 on the shamrock!

Waalaa!

One little bitty problem- I forgot to take it in on the sides (duh, size 4 shirt), so dress is big on darling daughter! BUT it will be perfectly fine next year with leggings! AND most importantly, daughter loved it ,as she "helped" make it.....

So there you have it- sometimes you CAN reuse a favorite dress and recycle it for your older child!
