I recently did one of those click on a site off a blog, then onto another button on that blog and another off the next blog (WHEW) and landed on a blog called DollClothespatterns.net! It immediately caught my eye, as the patterns were for the 18" American Girl type dolls and were very inexpensive! NOT to mention that is you signed up for her blog subscription you got TWO free patterns (a hobo bag and fake money-always a good thing- keeps the kids from taking the monopoly money and the bank needing one of those government handouts when it comes time to play the game on family night-LOL).
I strolled through the site and loved the Flared Party Dress! AND I knew my daughter would love it too! So I clicked and within 3 minutes I had ordered, paid and downloaded the pattern- COOL! The best part? You can reprint as many times as you need to once you download the pattern to YOUR computer!
The digital pattern was great as you only had to print out what you needed (aka the pattern pieces!) and follow along for the instructions on you laptop/computer! Now I will readily admit I am NOT the best sewer in the house (that would be my mom), but I'm pretty fair and I know my way around a pattern! The dress pattern itself was only 3 pieces (another big plus-simple and quick!). The instructions were very clear and the accompanying pictures were perfect in showing what you need to doing at each step! The pattern also comes with instructions for making the adorable sandals, knitted headband and ruffle on the bottom of the dress- talk about a super deal!
I had some adorable green fabric that is very springy and could pass for clover-ish for St Patty's Day, or Easter. And the green looked great on Kaya, so I decided to use it. You need a little less than 1/2 a yard per dress-isn't that great?
I also had a 1/4 yard of some cute birthday block fabric and as I can't knit (I am knit challenged and have been for over 30 years, doesn't matter who is teaching me, it's a lost cause), I knew I had to skip the knit part of the dress, so i opted for a ruffle instead. As I've told you before- the best patterns accommodate minor changes with ease, as this one is no exception! I used 2 1/2 blocks were of the extra material, so I could have enough for the hem and top seam, and have alot of the blocks show!
I then decided it needed something else, so I went ahead and cut out 4 blocks and used them as an embellishment on the chest area. I think it turned out pretty good myself!
I couldn't find any matching green to make the sandals with (our local Walmart is loosing the fabric area and they are condensing/not reordering some items right now), so I will have to make those after I hit the hobby store this weekend.
All in all, it took me about an hour to make the dress, due to adding of the extras (while watching tv and talking to hubby)- had I steamrolled it without distraction, I probably would have been done in about a 1/2 hour! I also used the SAME pattern and by taking off 3/4 an inch off the dress and bottom, I was able to make a smaller dress to fit one of darling daughters 12" dolls! Yeah 2 for 1! AND I think if I worked the measurement right, I could adjust it bigger for the Bitty baby doll! making it 3 in 1! I love Peggy!
Right now there are 3 patterns available on the site (flared dress, casual outfit and pajamas) AND a hoodie pattern is soon to come! PLUS, Peggy has some FREE accessory patterns on the site! She also has some great sewing tips on the blog! AND she has the BEST measurement chart I've seen comparing different 18" dolls measurements on the blog!
