Weekend Fun: Art by the Water

This past weekend we went to the wonderful town of Madisonville for their Saturday Art Market! On the waterfront of the Tchefuncte River (say that fast 5 times! and the pronunciation is CHE-funk-ta, in case you were wondering-LOL) ), it's set among the gorgeous old live oaks and showcases some great local artists!

Darling daughter wanted to go on a picnic, so we figured we stroll thru the art, check it out, then get some food and sit on the banks of the river. OOPS, we didn't check to see that the Dragonboat Festival was going on, but we had fun (separate post coming after this one!) and decided just to snack and go down the road to Cafe Madisonville for lunch (and more importantly some comfy chairs, some wonderful espresso (for Mom)  and ac (as it went into the 80s!))! CM had a booth at the fair with some super duper peanut butter cookies- which daughter ADORED- the pix below is what's left of the 2nd one (and that's about 1/5 of ONE cookie she's holding!).

CM has a super menu, and even better personnel,  and we highly recommend them to anyone who will be going thru the area! Check out their vanilla/chocolate cupcakes for some WOW (I'd woulda taken a pix, but it got attacked before I could!)

At the first booth we met Odie Tucker, a brilliant local water colorist! We started talking and am impromptu art lesson started!

art lesson 1
No, she's not shy- ask her if she wants to paint, and BAMM, she's there!
She's never used professional watercolors, just the ones that come on the kids coloring books,
so I was really impressed that she handled such a small brush well (travel set).

art lesson 2
And no, she's not left handed- but for some reason she paints left handed!
She just decided she liked painting better that way!
Then Odie helped her some (tried to make it cohessive- she's 3-she knew what she
was making, we didn't!), and signed it and waala- her first masterpiece!

You gotta love it!
I personally think she was drawing a pix of the boats, trees, boats and water!

Check out Odie's website- he's got some GREAT art and very reasonable prices- and I can attest, he's a really great guy! I love how he includes the date into his signature!
I can't believe he came late to being a professional artist (30 years!)- he's really quite good!

This is the print that we bought:
street car art

It looks better in person- I had a hard time capturing the colors on camera- it totally reminds me of early mornings on St Charles Ave in Uptown New Orleans, enroute to high school. if you've ever visited, and rode the street cars down St. Charles, you know what I mean!

He also has some great boat and plane prints, not to mention some of wonderful New Orleans icons.
So if you need a super Mother's Day or Father's Day present- check out his site!

I would have taken more pix, but some of the artists don't like you taking pix of their unique art!
But trust me, you'll find something you'll want if you visit the Market!
